Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini on Thursday put a 60 million euro price tag on star playmaker Javier Pastore’s head.

Pastore played a starring role in Wednesday’s 2-2 Italian Cup semi-final, first leg draw at AC Milan to add further weight to his burgeoning reputation.

And when asked how much it would take to prise the 21-year-old away from Sicily, Zamparini replied: “Upwards of 60 million euros.”

However, the controversial club owner said that doesn’t mean he is touting Pastore or any of his players to potential suitors.

“We’re happy that our (best young) talents are being looked at by other clubs but it’s clear that we have our own team and we’re going to keep it, although we do let players go when they reach maturity,” added Zamparini.

“We already have talents (who have left and gone) all over Italy but we’ll acquire others.

“The best players only leave when they ask to, as happened with (Edinson) Cavani.”

The Uruguay striker left in the summer to join Napoli after spending three years in Sicily and he has blossomed in Naples, scoring 25 goals in 32 league matches this season.

But Zamparini revealed that he simply couldn’t afford to keep him on the club’s payroll.

“The problem I had with his salary is now (Napoli president Aurelio) De Laurentiis’s problem.

“However, our talents will all stay next season, that’s 100percent certain.

“But we also have to build a great team in defence because at the end of the day, the team that concedes the least wins and we have the worst defence in the league.

“The problems between myself and (Coach Delio) Rossi sprung from that.”

Zamparini actually fired Rossi at the end of February following a 7-0 defeat at home to Udinese. However his successor Serse Cosmi lasted only four games as he too was fired after a 4-0 loss to Catania in the Sicilian derby.

Rossi was reinstated but Zamparini has consistently refused to commit himself to retaining the coach next season.

Before the Udinese debacle, Zamparini had caused a stir by openly criticising his coach’s defensive record following a 4-2 defeat at home to Fiorentina.

Rossi responded by saying he could only work with the players Zamparini supplied him.

In any case, even if he does improve his defence which is the second worst in the league, Zamparini is not expecting to challenge for honours any time soon.

“Having good players isn’t enough to win, you need to be a big club and much more,” he said. “At Palermo we can only be competitive up to a certain point.”
