{"id":3794,"date":"2011-12-01T13:16:05","date_gmt":"2011-12-01T13:16:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/12\/zimbabwe-fast-food-restaurant-withdraws-dictator-advert\/"},"modified":"2011-12-01T13:16:05","modified_gmt":"2011-12-01T13:16:05","slug":"zimbabwe-fast-food-restaurant-withdraws-dictator-advert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/12\/01\/zimbabwe-fast-food-restaurant-withdraws-dictator-advert\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe: Fast Food Restaurant Withdraws Dictator Advert"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapa.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/sapa180.gif\" alt=\"South African Press Association (Johannesburg)\" title=\"Visit South African Press Association (Johannesburg)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1 December 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>The &#8220;last dictator standing&#8221; TV commercial currently running in South Africa will be cancelled, the Nando&#8217;s restaurant chain said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve noted with concern the political reaction emanating out of Zimbabwe, including perceived threats against Nando&#8217;s Zimbabwe&#8217;s management, staff and customers,&#8221; the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, a militant youth group loyal to Zimbabwe&#8217;s president Robert Mugabe called for a boycott of Nando&#8217;s because of the ad.<\/p>\n<p>Nando&#8217;s SA said it took these threats very seriously and would no longer flight the TV commercial as part of its festive season campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We feel strongly that this is the prudent step to take in a volatile climate and believe that no TV commercial is worth risking the safety of Nando&#8217;s staff and customers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The commercial shows Mugabe dining alone at Christmas, his empty table set for departed dictators, including Muammar Gaddafi.<\/p>\n<p>To the soundtrack of Mary Hopkin&#8217;s hit song &#8220;Those Were the Days,&#8221; the commercial shows an actor playing Mugabe reminiscing about his times with former dictators.
