AUGUSTA, Georgia, April 7 (Reuters) – Spain\u2019s Alvaro Quiros<\/a>
\nbirdied the last two holes at Augusta National on Thursday to
\njoin Rory McIlroy<\/a> as the first round leader at the Masters.<\/p>\n

No one was more surprised than Quiros himself to see his
\nname at the top of the leaderboard but his late charge was as
\nspectacular as it was unexpected.<\/p>\n

With the sun already setting over the pine tree-lined
\ncourse, only the golfing faithful remained to watch the final
\ngroup finish their rounds but it was certainly worth the wait.<\/p>\n

Quiros, who claimed his fifth European Tour title at the
\nDubai Desert Classic in February but has since struggled for
\nform and confidence, was playing one of the best rounds of his
\nlife.<\/p>\n

In each of his two previous appearances at the Masters, the
\n28-year-old Spaniard had missed the cut and had never broken
\npar for a round.<\/p>\n

But the massive hitter who consistently drives the ball
\nover 320 yards changed all that after reaching the turn in
\nthree-under-par 33 and then covering the back nine in 32 for a
\nspectacular seven-under 65.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two previous years, I came to the Masters thinking
\nthat I can play well, shoot low, and this was my main mistake,\u201d
\nthe self-deprecating Quiros explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis golf course, it\u2019s too tough. Every single situation
\nhas to be measured\u2014the risk, the reward. Today, I was very
\nhappy making pars. This is why probably shoot 65.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quiros, who has often said he has the hands of a
\nbricklayer, was even more surprised to learn that he ended the
\nas joint pacesetter because he never bothered to check the
\nleaderboard before starting his round.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just checked what the other Spanish guys were doing,
\nnothing else,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to see, this is my third appearance (at the
\nMasters) and my best score was 75. I cannot be pretending to
\nsee the leaderboard, it would be stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his sizzling start, Quiros said his past
\nexperiences at Augusta National had left him with modest
\nambitions for the rest of the tournament.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy target tomorrow is make the cut,\u201d he said. \u201cIt would be
\nstupid to think about shooting 65 again because it\u2019s not my
\nway.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I said before, 75 was my best round here. It could be
\njust one good round of golf. So to avoid that, I want to think
\nabout the next shot that I\u2019m going to have, which is the tee
\nshot on the first hole.\u201d<\/p>\n
