{"id":373361,"date":"2011-04-08T00:47:58","date_gmt":"2011-04-08T00:47:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/04\/08\/hospital-outbreak-link-to-us-lab\/"},"modified":"2011-04-08T00:47:58","modified_gmt":"2011-04-08T00:47:58","slug":"hospital-outbreak-link-to-us-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/04\/08\/hospital-outbreak-link-to-us-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"Hospital outbreak link to US lab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"71.419387242592\">\n    \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>7 April 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>20:47 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Health officials have linked an outbreak of bacterial infection found in nine Alabama hospital patients who died to contamination at a laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>The victims, already seriously ill, were stricken with Serratia marcescens bacteraemia in February and March.<\/p>\n<p>Ten other patients also fell ill after receiving an intravenous nutritional product made by Alabama&#8217;s Meds IV.<\/p>\n<p>State officials said it was likely contaminated ingredients and pharmacy equipment had led to the infections.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are trying to identify where the weak point in the chain of infection control occurred,&#8221; Alabama Department of Public Health director Dr Donald Williamson told the Associated Press on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>  <span>Bacteria samples<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Upon learning of the outbreak, Meds IV Pharmacy ceased production and on 24 March recalled all of its intravenous products, officials have said.<\/p>\n<p>No further infections were reported.<\/p>\n<p>The Alabama Department of Public Health said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adph.org\/news\/assets\/110407.pdf\">statement<\/a> it had discovered bacteria genetically identical to that found in 12 of the 19 patients in a container and stirrer used to mix ingredients in the nutritional product, on a tap water spigot and in a bag of amino acids used to produce the product.<\/p>\n<p>Of the seven other patients, six had no bacteria samples available for genetic testing and one more case was pending a test, the department said.<\/p>\n<p>About 35% of hospital patients who were given the product manufactured by Meds IV were stricken with Serratia marcescens infection.<\/p>\n<p>The affected individuals ranged in age from 38 to 94, the health department said.<\/p>\n<p>However, officials told the Associated Press that they might never know whether the infections caused the illnesses and deaths because the patients were so ill to begin with.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Originally posted here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-us-canada-13008461\" title=\"Hospital outbreak link to US lab\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hospital outbreak link to US lab<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 7 April 2011 Last updated at 20:47 ET Health officials have linked an outbreak of bacterial infection found in nine Alabama hospital patients who died to contamination at a laboratory. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-373361","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
