AUGUSTA, April 7 (Reuters) – Tiger Woods<\/a>, straining to
\nremain upbeat as he struggles to regain form, said he was
\npleased after posting a 71 that put him six strokes off the
\npace after Thursday\u2019s opening round of the Masters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m right there in the ball game,\u201d said former world
\nnumber one Woods, who has gone nearly 17 months without a win
\nand is trying to get the hang of a new golf swing. \u201cI\u2019m only
\nsix back and we got a lot of golf ahead of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leading the 99-man field was 21-year-old Rory McIlroy<\/a> of
\nNorthern Ireland, who fired a seven-under-par 65 on a perfect
\nspring day at Augusta National. ID:nN07109698<\/p>\n

The enormous gallery following Woods, which included his
\nmother, Kultida, had few chances to erupt in approval for the
\nfour-times champion.<\/p>\n

Woods sank a bomb of a birdie putt at the 14th to cap three
\nstrong holes of highlights for the 35-year-old American, who
\ninsisted he was on the brink of finding his touch.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hit a lot of beautiful putts, a lot of beautiful putts,\u201d
\nWoods said. \u201cAnd they were just skirting the edge, so hopefully
\nthey will start going in.\u201d<\/p>\n

As disappointing as Woods has been during the longest
\nvictory drought of his career, Augusta National could be the
\ntonic for a revival.<\/p>\n

A year ago, Woods tied for fourth in an impressive return
\nat Augusta after competing for the first time in nearly five
\nmonths following the shocking unraveling of his private life.
\nIn 15 PGA Tour starts since, he failed to finish any higher.<\/p>\n

Struggles finding the fairway kept Woods from getting off
\nto a good start as he parred both par-fives after driving into
\nbunkers.<\/p>\n

Two poor putts put Woods in a bind with back-to-back bogeys
\nfrom the 10th. \u201cA complete misread and bad speed,\u201d was how he
\ndescribed his par-putt at the 10th. On the next hole, he
\nadmitted: \u201cI just pulled it. Pulled it. Bad putt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woods made amends by rolling in a testy, 12-foot downhill
\npar-saving putt at the 12th that stopped the slide and saved
\nhim from making three bogeys in a row for the first time as a
\nprofessional at the Masters dating back to 1997.<\/p>\n

Never the most accurate driver of the golf ball, Woods\u2019s
\nreturn to the heights will likely be pegged to the reappearance
\nof his magical short game and putting stroke.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the putts looked like they should have gone in,\u201d
\nsaid Woods, who made a beeline for the driving range after the
\nround. \u201cI felt really good over the putts today and I hit a lot
\nof good ones.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would rather be where Rory\u2019s at,\u201d he admitted. \u201cBut,
\nhey, it\u2019s a long way to go. We have a long grind ahead of us.\u201d
