WASHINGTON (AP)\u2014A day after the judge handling the NFL lockout lawsuit
\nurged the sides to go \u201cback to the table,\u201d the players and owners both
\nexpressed a willingness to do so. The hitch: Each offered to meet for talks in a
\nsetting the other finds unpalatable.<\/p>\n

A lawyer representing MVP quarterbacks Tom Brady<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> Peyton Manning<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> and other
\nplayers suing the NFL wrote U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson on Thursday
\nto say they\u2019re willing to engage in mediation overseen by her federal court in
\nSt. Paul, Minn.<\/p>\n

And the NFL sent its own letter Thursday to Nelson and to lawyers for the
\nplayers, proposing to resume talks about 1,000 miles from that courthouse\u2014
\ninstead returning to the Washington office of federal mediator George Cohen.<\/p>\n

Since filing suit in Minnesota on March 11, the players repeatedly have said
\nthey only are interested in meeting with the league to discuss settling the
\nlitigation. And since the lockout began at midnight later that night, the NFL
\nrepeatedly has said it only is interested in returning to mediated bargaining.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur letter to the players\u2019 attorneys today proposes negotiations with
\nowner involvement under the supervision of Federal Mediation and Conciliation
\nService Director George Cohen. A copy has been sent to Judge Nelson,\u201d NFL
\nspokesman Greg Aiello wrote in an e-mail. \u201cThe goal of the discussions would be
\nto resolve all outstanding issues and achieve a global resolution. As part of
\nour proposal, we offered to give the players assurances that they will not
\ncompromise any legal position as a result of the discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cohen mediated 16 days of negotiations in February and March that failed to
\nresult in a new collective bargaining agreement, and the old one expired. The
\nunion dissolved itself, saying it no longer represented players in bargaining
\nunder labor law, which allowed them to sue the league under antitrust law.
\nOwners locked out the players, creating the NFL\u2019s first work stoppage since
\n1987.<\/p>\n

During Wednesday\u2019s hearing in St. Paul on the players\u2019 request for a
\npreliminary injunction that would lift the lockout, Nelson recommended
\ncourt-supervised talks, saying such negotiations should take place at \u201cnot the
\nplayers\u2019 table, not the league\u2019s table, but a neutral table, if you will.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is really a matter that should be resolved as soon as possible,\u201d
\nadded Nelson, who said she would take \u201ca couple of weeks\u201d to rule on the
\nplayers\u2019 bid for an injunction.<\/p>\n

Nelson said she \u201cwould be glad to facilitate\u201d negotiations, if the sides
\nwere interested.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs class counsel on behalf of the Brady class, we think this is an
\nexcellent suggestion and are prepared to engage in such mediation without
\ndelay,\u201d an attorney for the players, Barbara Berens, wrote to Nelson on
\nThursday. \u201cOur agreement is, of course, contingent on the NFL defendants\u2019
\nagreement that they will not attempt to use this, our willingness to mediate,
\nagainst the Brady class in some way, for example by arguing that such mediation
\nefforts constitute \u2018collective bargaining\u2019 or otherwise arise out of a \u2018labor
\nrelationship.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n

Also Thursday, Nelson received yet another letter accepting her offer of
\nfacilitating mediation\u2014this one from a lawyer representing Hall of Famer Carl
\nEller and other retired players whose case was combined with the Brady case.<\/p>\n
