AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP)\u2014The world\u2019s top-ranked player is starting to realize
\nAugusta National doesn\u2019t suit his game.<\/p>\n

Martin Kaymer<\/a> had another miserable day at the Masters on Thursday,
\nstruggling to a 6-over 78 that sets him up for an early trip home.<\/p>\n

Again.<\/p>\n

Kaymer has missed the cut in all three of his previous Masters, and this was
\nhis worst score yet. He\u2019ll have to shoot in the 60s Friday\u2014something he\u2019s
\nnever done at Augusta\u2014to have any chance of making it to the weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very difficult,\u201d the German golfer said. \u201cThere\u2019s some golf
\ncourses that suit you and some, they just don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaymer has never been particularly adept at drawing the ball, producing
\nshots that bend gently from right to left and make it easier to play numerous
\nholes at Augusta. He even joked before the tournament that he\u2019d like to play the
\ncourse left-handed, like defending champion Phil Mickelson<\/a>, because it\u2019s easier
\nto fade the ball.<\/p>\n

During the practice rounds, Kaymer worked on his draw and seemed confident
\nin the results.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t work when he started keeping score.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy putting was OK. I think my short game was definitely better than the
\nlast three years,\u201d Kaymer said. \u201cBut I just didn\u2019t hit the ball as good as the
\nlast two or three years.\u201d<\/p>\n

He even changed his routine before the Masters, hoping that might help.
\nInstead of playing the week before at the PGA Tour event in Houston, he worked
\non his game at a Tom Fazio-designed course right up the road from Augusta
\nNational.<\/p>\n

The results were even worse.<\/p>\n

Kaymer was two strokes higher that any of his previous six rounds at the
\nMasters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a shame,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s obviously a huge tournament here, and
\nif it doesn\u2019t really suit your eye and you know that quite well, it\u2019s a little
\nfrustrating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaymer\u2019s round really fell apart at No. 10. He hooked his tee shot and the
\nball took a wicked bounce to the left, winding up in the trees. He was able to
\npunch it out, but couldn\u2019t reach the green with his third shot. He wound up with
\na double-bogey 6.<\/p>\n

Asked about his plans for Friday, Kaymer sounded as if he was ready to start
\npacking his bags.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not really a game plan,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t really know how to
\nplay the golf course. I don\u2019t know. I can think about it another hour or
\nhour-and-a-half or two hours, and I just don\u2019t really find a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last August, Kaymer won the PGA Championship in a playoff for his first
\nmajor title. Then, after an eight-shot romp at Abu Dhabi, he made the final of
\nthe Match Play in February to vault past Lee Westwood<\/a> for the top spot in the
\nworld rankings.<\/p>\n

At Augusta, Kaymer still looks like a duffer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to try something different again,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what I
\nhave to do here. Maybe one day it will work out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n
