AUGUSTA, Georgia, April 7 (Reuters) – Camilo Villegas<\/a> felt
\nhe was on track to finally finding the right balance at Augusta
\nNational after firing a two-under-par 70 in the opening round
\nof the Masters on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old Colombian, who has struggled early this
\nseason, got off to a bumpy start with a bogey at the first
\nbefore posting three birdies in a row from the 13th to put his
\nname up on the leaderboard.<\/p>\n

Villegas, whose best Masters finish is a tie for 13th in
\n2009, said he has learned from his four previous trips to
\nAugusta to keep his cool and exercise patience.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was good. I only hit it in one really bad spot today,
\nwhich was the right bunker on 10. Other than that, I just took
\nmy medicine,\u201d he said. \u201cI played safe. I was kind of calm.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mistake at the 10th led to one of his three bogeys in
\nthe round, but Villegas said he has learned how to cope.<\/p>\n

Villegas has three top 10 finishes in major championships,
\nincluding a tie for eighth at last year\u2019s PGA Championship.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn this golf course, I learned some things. You still have
\nto have a good game out here, but experience helps a little
\nbit,\u201d said Villegas, a three-times winner on the U.S. tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a golf course that you got to respect, but you
\ncan\u2019t fear it,\u201d he added. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to know when to go and
\nwhen to back off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Villegas, who won last year\u2019s Honda Classic and had six
\nother top-10 finishes, has been trying to incorporate changes
\nin his game and has been struggling this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re always trying to get better, we\u2019re always trying to
\nimprove. We go through good times, bad times. Times where the
\nconfidence is really high and times where the confidence is not
\nso good,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got to battle, you got to grind, you got to play the
\ncourse. And I think that\u2019s kind of what I did today.\u201d
