Tarhouni has gone from being a senior lecturer at the University of Washington to managing the complicated world of finance and oil for the Libyan opposition&#8217;s new government.<\/p>\n<p>The whirlwind journey has him working oil deals, loans, credits and other ways to fund the rebels and finance the government.<\/p>\n<p>So when asked Thursday night by CNN&#8217;s Eliot Spitzer whether it has seemed all too surreal, Tarhouni said, &#8220;The hectic schedule that I keep so far is preventing me from thinking about it. &#8230; And then I realize that I don&#8217;t really want to think about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tarhouni, 60, returned in early March to his native Libya after more than 35 years in exile. He is the fledgling National Transitional Council&#8217;s finance and oil minister.<\/p>\n<p>Tarhouni told CNN that the National Transition Council plans to use oil sales to finance the rebels and to form a broader government.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from Benghazi, Tarhouni estimated the opposition is producing more than 100,000 barrels a day and had just signed an oil export agreement with Qatar.<\/p>\n<p>But sanctions against Moammar Gadhafi&#8217;s regime, including on banking and other financial matters, has hampered the opposition, said Tarhouni, who has a doctorate in economics and finance from Michigan State University.<\/p>\n<p>Tarhouni is hoping that the sanctions, as they apply to the opposition, are lifted soon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I need this lifting to have happened yesterday,&#8221; said Tarhouni. &#8220;It is coming &#8230; but not as fast as I would like it to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tarhouni, who has lived in Seattle with his family for several years, is a senior lecturer in the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. He has taught at the university since 1985.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime friend Rita Zawaideh told CNN that Tarhouni is a veteran political activist and their association began with the Organization of Arab Students in the early 1970s after he left Libya.<\/p>\n<p>After he left his native land, Tarhouni &#8220;realized he could help the people [from] outside Libya,&#8221; said Zawaideh, who owns a Middle East and North Africa tour company based in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>The educator was persona non grata in Libya, she said. &#8220;There was no two sides.
