The figure represents 2.7 percent of 13,760 pregnant women who underwent the compulsory HIV test, as part of measures to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Harvey Akafu, Information Officer of the Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency, said in 2009, a total of 10,412 Pregnant women were tested, out of which 215 were found to have contracted the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Akafu said even though testing for HIV and AIDS was a voluntary exercise, as part of their ante-natal care procedure, pregnant women were expected to under-go under the test in order to prevent transmitting the virus to their unborn babies. <\/p>\n<p>He said 13,209 people were counselled to under-go the Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) last year. Mr. Akafu said in 2009, VCT Centres in the Metropolis counselled 5,469 people out of which 5,448 were tested.<\/p>\n<p>He said 1,064 representing 19 percent of those who tested, were found to be HIV positive. The Health Directorate, he said, recorded 1,013 HIV management cases last year, which were placed on clinical care. Mr. Akafu said in 2009, 35 of 831 HIV management cases placed under clinical care died.
