Zaria – The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, has expressed fear that some villages in Northern Nigeria may be washed away by flood.

The vice-chancellor made the statement when he received the National President of Nigerian Metrological Society, Prof. Abiodun Adeloye, in his office in Zaria, on Monday.

He said the fear was based on the warning by meteorologists that the country might experience heavy rains during the year.
Mustapha called for urgent and aggressive sensitisation of the people on measures to reduce the consequences of the floods when they occurred.

Mustapha said it was regrettable that Nigeria lacked adequate capacity to handle emergencies of great magnitude and urged the three tiers of government to invest heavily on climate change to change the people’s poor attitude to the environment.

Mustapha observed that some substandard structures that could not withstand minimal flood dotted many villages and described the trend as a potential danger to the environment..

Earlier, Adeloye said he was in the university to begin preparations for an international conference, scheduled to hold on the campus soon.

He expressed appreciation to the management of ABU for the reception and promised to keep the relationship between the institution and the society alive. (NAN)
