{"id":349202,"date":"2011-03-30T07:51:10","date_gmt":"2011-03-30T07:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/30\/bbc-website-crashes-for-an-hour\/"},"modified":"2011-03-30T07:51:10","modified_gmt":"2011-03-30T07:51:10","slug":"bbc-website-crashes-for-an-hour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/30\/bbc-website-crashes-for-an-hour\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC website crashes for an hour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"61.072948328267\">\n    \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>30 March 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>03:51 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Technical problems with the BBC website saw a total outage of the news site, iPlayer and other web services yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The disruption lasted for around an hour on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>BBC bosses admitted that there had been a &#8220;major network problem&#8221; but no official explanation has yet been given.<\/p>\n<p>The outage set Twitter alight with angry fans questioning how such a breakdown happened.<\/p>\n<p>It led to speculation that the site had been attacked, while others blamed cutbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Users trying to get on to the BBC website on Tuesday evening from around 11pm to midnight were confronted with an error message, showing the BBC&#8217;s iconic test card.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not often we get a message from the BBC&#8217;s technical support teams saying &#8216;total outage of all BBC websites&#8217;,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/blogs\/theeditors\/2011\/03\/technical_problems_3.html\">blogged Steve Herrmann, editor of the BBC news website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We haven&#8217;t had a full technical debrief, but it&#8217;s clear it was a major network problem,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Siemens, which provides the BBC&#8217;s technical support, said network engineers were looking into the problems at sites in both Maidenhead, Berkshire and London Docklands.<\/p>\n<p>In an e-mail to staff, the firm said engineers: &#8220;remotely powered down equipment at a second Internet connection at Telehouse Docklands.
