But the worst mistake the Uganda Cranes will commit today is read too much into these unenviable statistics.

The 1978 losing finalists in Ghana, the Cranes, are themselves, still labouring to grace the event again, three decades on.

True they fare betterin ranking with Uganda stuck on 86th overall and 19th on the continent and even top Group J on four points, one ahead of Guinea Bissau and Angola, after two games.

Most of the named Guinea Bissau players went through Portugal U19 or U21 squads with others plying their trade in France, Sweden, Romania and Serbia.

But so are Cranes who have stars in Serbia, Scotland, Iceland and Austria. But when the two sides finally lineup at the Lino Correia artificial turf at 7pm (4pm Bissau time) tonight, there will be no respect for who is ranked where. Fortunately for the visitors, coach Bobby Williamson, too, dismisses these rankings with contempt.

If Uganda are to break the 34-year-old jinx, and bring to an end a winless away streak in the qualifiers since 2001, they have to probe, defend, and pay the ‘until the final whistle’ attention.

Key skirmishes

Iano v Massa/Geoffrey Sserunkuma

The Benfica de Bissau shot-stopper, Iano, shut the doors on Kenya’s Dennis Oliech and company in Bissau last September and it took a Gilberto first half penalty to break his resilience in Luanda, Angola in October.
