{"id":343261,"date":"2011-03-28T01:24:34","date_gmt":"2011-03-28T01:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/28\/a-lesson-learned-finishing-up-strong-pga-com\/"},"modified":"2011-03-28T01:24:34","modified_gmt":"2011-03-28T01:24:34","slug":"a-lesson-learned-finishing-up-strong-pga-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/28\/a-lesson-learned-finishing-up-strong-pga-com\/","title":{"rendered":"A Lesson Learned: Finishing up strong (PGA.com)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"75.511745465358\">\n<p>No one can argue that the PGA Tour\u2019s Florida swing can provide great drama due to some exciting \u2013 and difficult \u2013 finishing holes.\u00a0 Starting with <em>the Bear Trap<\/em> at PGA National to <em>the Blue Monster<\/em> at Doral, the Tour players need to be on the top of their game at the end of their rounds in order to finish strong.\u00a0 Bay Hill \u2013 home of the <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/pga\/players\/224\/\">Arnold Palmer<\/a> Invitational last week \u2013 is no exception.\u00a0 16, 17, and 18 are some of the most exciting holes in golf\u2026who can forget <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/pga\/players\/90\/\">Robert Gamez<\/a> holing out on 18 to win in 1990 or Tiger dropping a 20-footer to win in 2009 (or his 25-footer to win in 2008).\u00a0 One thing is for sure \u2013 these players were fresh physically and mentally at the end of their round just as they were at the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of us can certainly learn from this.\u00a0 How many times have you had a good round going only to let it slip away towards the end?\u00a0 Are you tired when you are finished with your round?\u00a0 There are many factors that can attribute to this, but three things really stand out:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>General Conditioning<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 It\u2019s no secret that the tour players are in great shape.\u00a0 We often hear a lot about their workout regimens, and a big part of that is what they do to improve their cardiovascular performance.\u00a0 If you want to improve your game, improve your cardio.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to go out and start training for marathon, but making little changes to your daily routines \u2013 like taking stairs instead of elevators or going for a brisk walk in the evening \u2013 can lead to better performance on the course.\u00a0 For me, there is nothing better than throwing a few clubs in a little carry bag and walking nine.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Nutrition during your round<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 This is a simple concept, but so often abused. \u00a0If you want to finish your round strong, then you need to be hydrated and energized!\u00a0 Drink water throughout your round, and when you come to the halfway house make a smart decision on what you put into your body as this will affect your mental and physical condition coming down the stretch.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Good swing mechanics<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Efficient golf swings do not take as much energy to create and are easier to repeat!\u00a0 This also leads to less practice swings throughout your round, not to mention helping the pace of play.\u00a0 A player that makes compensations throughout his swing will only be able to manipulate for so long\u2026at some point it will break down.\u00a0 Seek the help of someone reputable to help you identify the flaws in your swing and work to become more efficient at striking the ball.<\/p>\n<p>Any one of these things alone will help to improve your game\u2026but combining the three will take your game to places it hasn\u2019t been.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/pga\/players\/7279\/\">Martin Laird<\/a> proved it last week.\u00a0 There is no better feeling than finishing a round strong and creating momentum for the next time you tee it up\u2026or to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational!<\/p>\n<p><em>Scott Szymoniak is the Director of Instruction for Canongate Golf Clubs in Atlanta, Georgia.
