LAGOS — The President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, has said that the newly launched Nigerian Election News Report, NENR, would bring about professionalism in the communication industry.

NENR is funded by the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, through the International Repulican Institute in conjunction with the International Press Centre, IPC, and the Institute of War and Peace Reporting, IWPR.

Speaking, at the launch of the news service’s website, weekend, Adefaye, also Edidor in Chief of Vanguard Newspaper, said the site would not only enable reporters to show their skills but would bring about professionalism in journalistic style and reporting.

The first of its type in Africa, the NENR service would use Interactive Voice Response, IVR, technology to provide election news for about 2,000 working journalists across the country via their mobile phones, between now and the end of the election period and possibly thereafter.

According to Adefaye, “this news service is not just to show your skills, it gives the platform to present your report objectively. What the website will do is to improve journalism generally.

“Beyond that, it is an avenue to bring professionalism into journalism. I would have preferred this workshop to be done on a larger scale with editors and other stakeholders in the media,” he said.

Prof Ivor Gaber of the Department of Journalism, City University London is coordinating NENR.
