{"id":343146,"date":"2011-03-28T00:51:11","date_gmt":"2011-03-28T00:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/28\/hk-banks-to-repay-lehman-backers\/"},"modified":"2011-03-28T00:51:11","modified_gmt":"2011-03-28T00:51:11","slug":"hk-banks-to-repay-lehman-backers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/28\/hk-banks-to-repay-lehman-backers\/","title":{"rendered":"HK banks to repay Lehman backers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"46.510638297872\">\n    \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>27 March 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>20:51 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong banks will repay investors who lost money after the collapse of investment bank Lehman Brothers.<\/p>\n<p>Sixteen banks have agreed to buy back financial instruments they sold to investors for up to 96.5% of their value. <\/p>\n<p>More than 40,000 customers had invested close to $2.5bn (\u00a31.6bn) in Lehman&#8217;s financial products.<\/p>\n<p>Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy in September 2008 due to an economic slowdown and credit crunch. <\/p>\n<p>The repayment of losses incurred following the collapse has been an ongoing saga in Hong Kong. <\/p>\n<p>Investors accused the banks of misleading them with complex products, triggering a tussle between customers, banks and regulators.<\/p>\n<p>The banks had previously offered to buy back the products at 60% of their value in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>The current offer will need to be approved by at least 75% of the investors who hold the products.
