In case you didn\u2019t know, Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell is a total perfectionist and shockingly thin. So when he was asked to film a draining outdoor scene for his film The Eagle on a bitterly cold November day all did not end well. <\/p>\n

Bell, 25, plays Roman slave-turned-warrior Esca who is on a quest to find The Eagle \u2014 the standard of a Roman legion which vanished in the Scottish Highlands. This mission requires Esca to wade torso-deep through a freezing cold river \u2014 clad in a skimpy leather tunic.<\/p>\n

While Bell could have easily asked his stand-in to take his place during filming breaks, the star refused to leave the river, to maintain authenticity. Half an hour later, with the water perilously close to freezing, he was on the point of collapse and had to be rescued.<\/p>\n

But his heroic near-death experience has been overshadowed by his American co-star Channing Tatum\u2019s own bit of bother. The model-turned-actor suffered scalding burns to his, er, nether regions, after an assistant forgot to mix cold water with the boiling-hot kettle water used to warm his body after filming. <\/p>\n

Worse still, as Tatum was being driven to get treatment, playing on the radio was the Kings Of Leon\u2019s lyric \u2018your sex is on fire\u2019.<\/p>\n

As well as defying death, Bell has also had to conquer a lifelong fear of riding horses for the film. \u2018It took six weeks of horse riding lessons to make me feel comfortable getting into the saddle,\u2019 he says. \u2018But I\u2019m fine now. Cold rivers may still be a challenge, but horses are fine.<\/p>\n

\u2018Cast me in a Western and I\u2019ll be in heaven \u2014 provided it\u2019s not freezing cold and I\u2019m wearing a skimpy slave\u2019s tunic, that is.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Eagle opens in cinemas today.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
