James Milner has rejected the theory that the inexperience of Andy Carroll and Jack Wilshere could handicap England against Wales on Saturday.

The Three Lions head to Cardiff knowing only a victory will be enough to take them back to the top of Euro 2012 qualifying Group G.

It should be a straightforward task.

Wales are yet to collect a point from three games so far, have a rookie coach in Gary Speed and only three high-class performers in Gareth Bale, Craig Bellamy and Aaron Ramsey.

The big plus for Wales could be a passionate home crowd at the Millennium Stadium, but Milner, 25, has backed the younger members of the squad to handle whatever is thrown at them.

“They are good players who have played in hostile atmospheres every week in the Premier League,” said Milner.

“It helps if you have experienced it before – but they have.

“Jack has played at the Nou Camp in the Champions League, Andy Carroll has played in big games at Newcastle and is now at a big club like Liverpool.

“Ultimately they are good players, which is why they are with us.”

Only a matter of weeks ago, England’s rugby players slapped their Welsh counterparts down, adopting a superior attitude that emerged on the field in the shape of a 26-19 Six Nations triumph.

Yet such an attitude does not appear to be in vogue for the footballers, with Milner insistent minds should remain focused on the job in front of them.

“We put pressure on ourselves to perform every time we step out onto the field,” he said. “You can say what you want beforehand, ultimately, it comes down to what you do. However good you say you will be, it is about proving it.”

Not surprisingly, Robbie Savage has been vocal this week as well, trying to get under England’s skin to expose any doubt in the visitors’ minds before they head over the Severn Bridge, labelling Terry as one of their weak links.

“He is going to say those things to give Wales confidence because he wants them to win,” said Milner. “We have to prove him wrong. I am sure John Terry has had worse said about him in the past.

“He has proved in the Premier League and for England what a great player he is.”
