{"id":334078,"date":"2011-03-24T07:57:57","date_gmt":"2011-03-24T07:57:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/24\/dfid-launches-report-on-uk-to-ghana-remittances\/"},"modified":"2011-03-24T07:57:57","modified_gmt":"2011-03-24T07:57:57","slug":"dfid-launches-report-on-uk-to-ghana-remittances","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/24\/dfid-launches-report-on-uk-to-ghana-remittances\/","title":{"rendered":"DFID Launches Report On UK To Ghana Remittances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div>A report funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) on remittances from UK to Ghana has revealed that despite the growth in payments, the system used to send the money is far from perfect.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana and the UK have had long relations dating back to<br \/>pre-colonial times and another peak of the close ties would be next<br \/>week\u2019s football friendly between Ghana and England in Wembley.<\/p>\n<p>Also, exports from Ghana to the UK had grown by 38 per cent since<br \/>2004, and remittance flows to Ghana have tripled in the last 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>However, although the remittance flow was competitively priced it<br \/>was not making the most of available technologies, such as using<br \/>mobile phones for money transfers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the new remittance products are reliant on the recipient<br \/>holding a bank account, which is not always the case in Ghana,\u201d a<br \/>statement by DFID in Accra said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChanges in regulation in Ghana would help, as current rules<br \/>restrict the options for payout networks,\u201d said the report, which<br \/>proposed improvements to the UK to Ghana money transfer systems.<\/p>\n<p>It concluded that remittances would continue to be important for<br \/>Ghana, and that actions should be taken to maximise the benefits that<br \/>they could bring.<\/p>\n<p>The report, Constraints in the UK to Ghana Remittances Market \u2013<br \/>Survey Analysis and Policy Recommendations \u2013 was produced for DFID by<br \/>Developing Markets Associates.<\/p>\n<p>The survey was conducted on 160 Ghanaians living in the UK, to<br \/>understand their remittance habits, aspirations and market<br \/>experience(s).<\/p>\n<p>Interviews were conducted with 10 leading Remittance Service<br \/>Providers to understand the market-players\u2019 perspectives and<br \/>experience of operating in the UK and Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>The DFID statement quoted Pat Torto, a remitter to Ghana since<br \/>the 1970s, as saying \u201cI generally use the same service regularly which<br \/>is local and reliable, although when I travel home I take money with<br \/>me to exchange in Ghana.
