BOSTON (AP)\u2014The Memphis Grizzlies<\/a> are still in the playoff chase, and
\nthey\u2019re doing it with a couple of guys who know a little bit about the
\npostseason.<\/p>\n

Leon Powe<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> and Tony Allen<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> members of the Celtics\u2019 2008 championship team,
\nreturned to Boston on Wednesday night to help the Memphis Grizzlies win 90-87
\nand solidify their hold on the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western
\nConference.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you can come on the road and beat a great team like that, and do it
\non the defensive end, it\u2019s huge for a young, up-and-coming team,\u201d said Powe,
\nwho scored 13 points. \u201cThat just adds to our confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marc Gasol<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> scored 11 points with 11 rebounds and Zach Randolph<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> had 13 and
\neight for Memphis, which improved to one-half game behind seventh-place New
\nOrleans in the West. The Grizzlies remained two games ahead of ninth-place
\nHouston, which beat Golden State later Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Powe, who spent the first three years of his career in Boston, saw little
\naction in Cleveland before the Cavaliers released him to sign with Memphis on
\nMarch 5. He came off the bench to score 13 points in 17 minutes\u2014his best game
\nsince signing with the Grizzlies.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeon Powe was the baddest man on the planet tonight,\u201d Celtics coach Doc
\nRivers said. \u201cIt\u2019s not like they tricked us. They just drove through somebody
\nand scored.\u201d<\/p>\n

Allen spent the first six years of his career in Boston before signing with
\nMemphis as a free agent last summer. He scored nine with five assists.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re both really tough, physical guys. They\u2019re veteran guys who have
\nbeen to the mountaintop and won,\u201d Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. \u201cThis is
\nour second year in a row coming in here and getting a win, so this is special.
\nBut I\u2019m sure for those guys this is extra special.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul Pierce<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> scored 22 for Boston, but he missed an off-balance 3-pointer at
\nthe buzzer that could have sent the game into overtime and the Celtics lost for
\nthe fifth time in nine games and fell one game behind Chicago (51-19) in the
\nrace for the best record in the Eastern Conference. Rajon Rondo<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> had six points,
\nseven steals, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, but he missed an ill-advised
\none-handed floater in the lane with 18 seconds left and Boston trailing 88-87.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so easy to second-guess it now,\u201d said Rivers, who didn\u2019t call a
\ntimeout because he thought Rondo was going to pass it to Pierce. \u201cI just think
\nyour best offensive player should always touch the ball on the last
\npossession.\u201d<\/p>\n

Memphis led 84-77 in the fourth quarter before Boston cut the deficit to one
\npoint, 86-85, with just over 3 minutes left on Pierce\u2019s 3-pointer. Gasol made it
\na three-point game before Glen \u201cBig Baby\u201d Davis made a jumper with 52 seconds
\nleft to cut the lead to one point.<\/p>\n

Davis had a chance to put Boston ahead, but Gasol blocked it, and then Gasol
\nstole a pass from Ray Allen<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> with 80 seconds left before converting a layup to
\nmake it 88-85. Davis\u2019 jumper made it a one-point game again, then Rondo
\nrebounded a Memphis miss and brought the ball the length of the court before
\nfloating up a one-handed shot that bounced off the back of the rim.<\/p>\n

The Celtics sent Mike Conley<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> to the line with 14 seconds left, and he made
\nboth free throws. Davis\u2019 3-point attempt to tie it missed, but after Gasol was
\nfouled he missed both free throws with 4.6 seconds left, giving Boston the ball
\nand a chance to send the game into overtime.<\/p>\n

Boston inbounded the ball to Pierce but he couldn\u2019t get off a clear shot.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is one of those prolific-type dudes,\u201d Tony Allen said. \u201cHe\u2019s hit
\nshots like that in his career. He missed and we got the win.\u201d<\/p>\n

After falling behind 36-26 in the second quarter, the Celtics scored eight
\nstraight points\u2014including back-to-back 3-pointers from Allen\u2014 to make it a
\ntwo-point game. It was 38-34 when Boston again scored eight in a row to take the
\nlead before Memphis scored twice in the final minute to make it 45-44 at the
\nhalf.<\/p>\n

Notes: Powe and Tony Allen received a warm welcome from the crowd at
\nintroductions. \u2026 Ray Allen wore a bandage above his right eye. He received
\nseven stitches after being elbowed by Jared Jeffries<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> in Monday night\u2019s game
\nagainst the New York Knicks<\/a>. Allen and Pierce are the only Celtics to play in
\nall 70 games this season. \u2026 The Grizzlies said on Tuesday that No. 2 scorer
\nRudy Gay<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> would miss the rest of the season to have surgery on his partially
\ndislocated left shoulder.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n
