The United Nations (UN), African Union (AU) and Economic Community of West<\/span><\/p>\n

African States (ECOWAS) yesterday hailed President Goodluck Jonathan\u2019s exemplary leadership of the sub- regional body.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jonathan is to hand-over the leadership of ECOWAS today.<\/span><\/p>\n

The commendations were made at the 39th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I wish from the outset to commend the leaders of the sub-region for their achievements over the last few months.I am particularly gratified with the excellent cooperation that ECOWAS and UN have been able to forge in support of peace and stability in West Africa, together with the AU.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mr Jean Ping, said ECOWAS “has experienced turbulence in the recent past, but recorded a number of success stories.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Ping said AU and ECOWAS had worked in tandem supporting each other for the good of the African continent, particularly the Ivorian crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n

The President of ECOWAS Commission, Mr Victor Gbeho, said through wise guidance, the regional economic bloc had developed into a most respected organisation in the continent and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I cannot conclude my address without paying merited tribute to President Jonathan, the Chairman of the Authority, for his tireless efforts, wise guidance and immense assistance to our community institutions since assuming the chairmanship of the organisation.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Despite the most punishing of schedules, including his role in the looming<\/span><\/p>\n

elections in Nigeria, he has spared neither time, effort nor resources in actively promoting integration, peace and security in the region.\u2019\u2019. Jonathan canvassed support for the country\u2019s bid for a permanent seat at the UN.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
