Chelsea.

The three-time Premier League winner was scouted by the Gunners before he moved to French club Rennes from Sparta Prague in 2002, but he was judged to be not good enough for Arsene Wenger’s side.

Arsenal currently find themselves in the midst of a goalkeeping crisis with Wojciech Szszcesny and Lukasz Fabianski ruled out for the rest out of the season, which prompted Wenger to bring 41-year-old Jens Lehmann out of retirement last week.

But Cech has revealed that he was close to signing for Chelsea’s crosstown rivals until red tape and a sudden change of heart saw Arsenal miss out.

“Before I went to Rennes I was watched by Arsenal but when I couldn’t get a work permit the situation was missed,” Cech told reporters

“And at the last minute I think the person who was the chief scout at Arsenal didn’t think I was good enough for the English league. So in the end it didn’t happen.”

Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-0 at the weekend to close the gap at the top of the Premier League to nine points with the Blues also having a game in hand on the Red Devils.

Cech insists that Champions League football is a minimum for Carlo Ancelotti’s side and revealed he feels the win against City will help the side to build momentum leading into the title run-in.

“I think that, despite everything, we did exactly the same thing when we were winning 5-0 as in the period when we were losing or drawing,” Cech added.

“Lately we’ve managed to win games and have done some good things.

“We’re more secure at the back and we still have the opportunity to catch Manchester United if they start dropping points.

“We are still dependent on all the others. But we have to win, win, win, and keep the pressure on.

“What is essential for a club like Chelsea is to have the stature of a club playing in the Champions League next season.

“We have some big games coming up and there are teams around us who are battling for it as well.

“The game against City was a six-pointer.”
