BRITAIN, which has publicly said it will not give aid to governments that do not recognise gay rights, yesterday defended homosexuality as a “modern” trend.<\/p>\n
British Ambassador to Zimbabwe Ms Deborah Bronnert described the practice as “modern”.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister David Cameron’s declaration that London will not help governments that do not support gay rights has been viewed as Whitehall’s way to smuggle homosexuality into African and other developing countries that depend on aid.<\/p>\n
This is despite widespread condemnation of gay relations, which are alien to African culture and an abomination.<\/p>\n
Britain’s foreign policy came under the spotlight recently when Mr Cameron said his government will not extend aid to countries that do not embrace homosexuality.<\/p>\n
Journalists yesterday pressed Ms Bronnert over the issue at a Press conference in Bulawayo, but she claimed the matter had no impact on Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n
President Mugabe is on record as saying Zimbabweans who engage in such acts will be punished severely.<\/p>\n
“The United Kingdom advocates the respect of human rights that include minority rights which cover sexual orientation,” said Ms Bronnert.<\/p>\n
“Modern constitutions even some in Africa respect that. In Zimbabwe, the UK works with the Government and this issue has no impact on the aid we give to this country.” Ms Bronnert said her government was prepared to work with any political party that wins elections.<\/p>\n
MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai recently came out in support for homosexuality in an interview with BBC News, a scenario analysts described as a desperate attempt to get funding from the West.<\/p>\n
This is despite his earlier statements where he rallied behind President Mugabe in condemning the practice.<\/p>\n
