LONDON, March 21 (Reuters) – Tiger Woods<\/a> is turning the
\ncorner with his game and victory at next month\u2019s U.S. Masters
\nwould put him back on track to break Jack Nicklaus\u2019s record of
\n18 major wins, according to former Masters champion Sandy Lyle<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Former world number one Woods is without a trophy since the
\n2009 Australian Masters but a top-10 finish at the WGC-Cadillac
\nChampionship this month, his first on the PGA Tour since June,
\nsuggested he was starting to find his form.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s going in the right direction,\u201d Briton Lyle
\ntold Reuters on Monday. \u201cFrom what I can see he could be heading
\nback to the way he played in the 1990s under the guidance of
\n(former coach) Butch Harmon.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe will obviously be very annoyed with his performances
\nlast year and this year he\u2019s going to come out with all guns
\nblazing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Masters may be a great springboard for him and if he
\nwins next month then Jack\u2019s record could be in jeopardy again,\u201d
\nadded the 53-year-old Scot.<\/p>\n

Lyle is expecting Woods to be galvanised by the special
\nsetting of Augusta where he claimed Green Jackets in 1997, 2001,
\n2002 and 2005.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe knows the course so damned well and I\u2019m sure he will be
\ninspired to do well,\u201d said the winner of the 1988 Masters and
\nthe 1985 British Open.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know he\u2019s not sitting around on the couch all day long
\nwatching TV. He is going to make sure he goes into the Masters
\nin tip-top shape.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think he will leave a stone unturned. He will be in
\nas good as shape as he possibly can be and going by his start to
\nthe year he sounds reasonably optimistic about his game and is
\nstarting to see some shots he hasn\u2019t seen in a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woods, 35, has been criticised in several quarters for
\ndeciding to undergo the fourth swing change of his career, this
\ntime under the direction of Canadian coach Sean Foley.<\/p>\n

However, Lyle, who recorded his first victory in 19 years by
\ncapturing the Senior World Championship in China this month,
\nbelieves the 14-times major winner has made the right move.<\/p>\n

OLD BACKSWING<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t overly keen on some of the takeaway positions he
\nwas trying to create with his old backswing,\u201d said the Scot.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow you can definitely see a change in the 1ast three or
\nfour feet of the backswing so the club is a lot squarer to the
\ntarget and slightly more inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere also seems to be a better shoulder tilt which is more
\nmatching his arm angle. He is staying connected a lot better and
\nhis balance is improving,\u201d added Lyle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think by the end of this year you\u2019ll start seeing very
\nsteady scoring from Tiger. You won\u2019t see a 73 and then all of a
\nsudden a 66, you will see a lot of 68s and 67s and his
\nconfidence will get stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyle, though, conceded that Woods would have to start waving
\nhis putter like a magic wand again in order to sustain a level
\nof scoring improvement, starting at this week\u2019s Arnold Palmer<\/a>
\nInvitational in Florida.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis putting is a little flaky right now but if his golf is
\nokay he\u2019ll start making putts again,\u201d said the former European
\nRyder Cup stalwart.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has got a tough task ahead. He\u2019s obviously had some
\ntough life changes in the last couple of years and it\u2019s going to
\ntake a while to get back in the swing of things.<\/p>\n

\u201cTiger\u2019s world is a whole different world now. He made it
\nthat way and he\u2019s got to face the music,\u201d added Lyle, referring
\nto the American\u2019s marital infidelities and recent divorce.
\n \u201cA few years ago, when he was chalking up his major wins
\nlike crossing off items on a shopping list, he was quite
\nincredible and it looked like he was well ahead of his record
\ntarget,\u201d Lyle said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe won 14 within no time and you thought, \u2018Crikey, he is
\ngoing to beat Jack\u2019s record in a couple of years\u2019,\u201d said Lyle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure that is still his drive and his goal now\u2014not
\njust to win tournaments but to win majors.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Masters, the first major of the season, starts on April
\n7.<\/p>\n
