{"id":327655,"date":"2011-03-21T19:26:03","date_gmt":"2011-03-21T19:26:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/21\/cote-divoire-young-gbagbo-supporters-line-up-to-join-army\/"},"modified":"2011-03-21T19:26:03","modified_gmt":"2011-03-21T19:26:03","slug":"cote-divoire-young-gbagbo-supporters-line-up-to-join-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/21\/cote-divoire-young-gbagbo-supporters-line-up-to-join-army\/","title":{"rendered":"Cote d&#8217;Ivoire: Young Gbagbo Supporters Line Up to Join Army"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"56.3410685375\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/><!-- close google_banner_mid div ---><\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.english.rfi.fr\/africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/7305b8cerfi-logo-en.jpg\" alt=\"Radio France Internationale (Paris)\" title=\"Visit Radio France Internationale (Paris)\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p><!-- begin story layout piece here --><\/p>\n<p>21 March 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>France and its allies are set to persuade Laurent Gbagbo to cede control of C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire to his internationally-backed opponent Alassane Ouattara, according to an adviser to President Nicolas Sarkozy.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of young Gbagbo supporters lined up to enrol in the army on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It seems as though we are on the right track to securing his departure from power,&#8221; special presidential adviser Henri Guaino said on French radio station RMC on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><!-- close google_inset_a div ---><\/p>\n<p>He could not say when Gbagbo might be pushed out, but he said he was optimistic about the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Four months after November&#8217;s disputed presidential elections, Gbagbo continues to refuse to cede power to Ouattara, despite pressure from the international community.<\/p>\n<p>Troops loyal to Gbagbo have clashed violently with supporters backing Ouattara for several weeks, and there is rising fear of civil war.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday morning thousands of young Gbagbo supporters lined up outside the army headquarters in Abidjan to enrol in the military.<\/p>\n<p>General Philippe Mangou, head of the Defence and Security Forces, loyal to Gbagbo, told the conscripts that they would be called when the moment was right.<\/p>\n<p>The 10,000-strong UN mission in C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire is, meanwhile, under pressure from Ouattara to take stronger action to protect civilians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We ask the UN to move fast, the people are in danger. It must take its responsibilities,&#8221; his spokesperson Anne Ouloto told the AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t understand that the international community has mobilised for Libya and can&#8217;t take firm decisions on the Ivory Coast.
