The Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr Mustapha Ahmed has stated that the revised version of the country\u2019s building code will soon be outdoored as part of efforts to meet current trend of development and safety.<\/p>\n

Presently, Ghana depends on constructional work policy, which spans over 40 years and has been described widely by experts as unsuitable for the rate of development in the country.<\/p>\n

Speaking in an interview in Tema after cutting the sod for works to begin on a new estate development project by T-Burger Properties at Community 22, the deputy minister noted that the revision of the existing policy is still on-going.<\/p>\n

He was optimistic that the full document would be ready by the second quarter of the year to ensure that houses met required standards.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are finalizing the building code to ensure safety during construction and after construction for the safety of occupants. We are aware of buildings collapsing during construction because of the kind of materials the contractors use. They simply fail to adhere to standards.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new code would give material specifications and fortification standards to guide building contractors and building inspectors when evaluating jobs.<\/p>\n

Standardization is a worldwide phenomenon, which is crucial for every aspect of human activity and Ghana cannot afford to be left out.<\/p>\n

With the revision of Ghana\u2019s building code it is expected that there would be an incorporation of all technical details to strengthen buildings in the country to prevent disasters.<\/p>\n

He said the new code would compel developers to conform to standards and avoid a situation whereby buildings which reach advanced stages are demolished due to poor siting.<\/p>\n

Dr Ahmed expressed worry about indiscriminate building and noted that developers have consistently ignored vital building regulations of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have failed to recognise that orderly development improve the environment. People are building indiscriminately which is leading to the development of slums everywhere with its attendant problems such as flooding and outbreak of diseases among others.\u201d<\/p>\n

The failure of developers to respect and follow planning laws in Ghana, he stated, has contributed to the poor development in the country especially in urban centres. \u201cLook the cities have become choked.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ghana currently has a housing deficit of over one million housing units and the country requires over 130,000 housing units every year.<\/p>\n

However data at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing indicate that only 40 per cent of the country\u2019s housing needs are met annually.<\/p>\n

The private sector has been identified as key partners in the quest to address the country\u2019s housing problem and government has acquired 60,000 acres of land for the establishment of land banks to facilitate the construction of affordable houses.<\/p>\n

A special task has been established to research and develop local materials to ensure that 60 per cent of materials used in the building industry are locally produced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
