Chelsea defender David Luiz insists the club remain determined to retain their Premier League title ahead of Manchester United.

The Blues finished top of the pile above the Red Devils last season, although a mid-season slump in form this term has allowed Sir Alex Ferguson’s troops to move into pole position with Arsenal nestled in second.

Chelsea, who beat United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge recently, have been much-improved of late and maintained their form on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Manchester City.

Luiz headed home the opening goal of the game from Didier Drogba’s free-kick and the Brazilian centre-back is quickly becoming something of a cult figure.

The 23-year-old has made an enterprising start to life in West London and although Chelsea are the underdogs in the title race, he has no plans to give up the fight anytime soon.

Determined

“We want to do everything this season,” said Luiz.

“We want to catch United in the Premier League and beat them in the Champions League. We have to believe – we can win the title.

“There are still many games and a lot of points to play for.

“I can’t play in the Champions League because I am cup-tied but I am very close to the team.

“The happiness of my team-mates will be my happiness if they do well.”
