Past Assembly members in the New Juaben and West Akim municipalities in the Eastern region are up in arms with their various administrations over their ex-gratia.<\/p>\n

The two assemblies reportedly promised to pay their out-gone assembly members GH\u00a21,000 each, but they have since gone back on their word, sparking fury and anger amongst the former members.<\/p>\n

The New Juaben Municipal Assembly promised to increase its ex-gratia from GH\u00a2200 to GH\u00a21,000 because of the nature of the work of assembly members and the accompanying expenses they made in line with their duties.<\/p>\n

According to the assembly members however, the Municipal Chief Executive, Alex Asamoah, on his own, rescinded the decision, indicating that GH\u00a2600 would rather be paid to each of them.<\/p>\n

The assembly members have thus petitioned the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, over the issue.<\/p>\n

In their petition copied to the Eastern regional minister, the MCE and municipal coordinating director, the aggrieved former New Juaben assembly members said on October, 29, 2010, the ex-gratia issue was discussed at their last ordinary meeting and based on Article 250, clause 2 of the 1992 Constitution, the assembly agreed that GH\u00a21,000 should be paid as ex-gratia.<\/p>\n

According to them, the MCE has all of a sudden rescinded the decision of the entire assembly to the chagrin of a majority of the assembly members.<\/p>\n

The MCE, in a response, said the decision taken was not final and that it was taken on the condition that the assembly would be able to pay. He said the assembly could not pay GH\u00a272,000 for the 72 assembly members from its internally-generated fund, but could pay not more than GH\u00a2600.<\/p>\n

Aggrieved past assembly members of Akim West municipality had also rejected the assembly\u2019s offer of motorbikes, saying that the ex-gratia should be given to them in cash.<\/p>\n

They stormed the inaugural meeting of the assembly last Tuesday and scattered the food meant for the newly-elected members in protest against the stand of the assembly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
