THE road to redemption is slow and painful but the Nationwide Football League (formerly Nationwide League) clubs are determined to take the first step towards redeeming the image of Kenya’s second tier that has been bedeviled by allegation of favoritism, match fixing, bribery and poor officiating.”We have taken measures to ensure order is restored in the league after poor management by the federation over the years, and especially last season,” said Kennedy Onyonyi, the convener of the NFKL club caucus. The clubs, most of whom were represented at the launch of the new season, were unanimous that the mistakes of last season were not to be repeated this season.<\/p>\n

The government through the Minister of Sport Paul Otuoma, who was represented by the Sports Commissioner Gordon Oluoch, assured the clubs of their support in stabilising the second division league.”No single individual or institution can fix the management problems bedeviling football in the country. We assure you of the government’s support as well as that of corporates groups across the country,” said the minister’s statement read by Oluoch.<\/p>\n

Bandari and Congo United, who are accused by most of their colleagues in the second tier league last season of having benefited from widespread malpractices by FKL officials got a slight reprieve on their current top flight status but with the caveat that if they are found culpable by the ongoing audit of last season results by FIFA, they will forfeit their place in the Kenya Premier league.”Those who committed or benefited from malpractices must pay and therefore if Bandari and Congo United are found culpable, they will not only relinquish their promotion in the top league but will also be demoted to the Nationwide Two league,” asserted Onyonyi, who went on to reveal that FKL has already dispensed with their officials-Mohammed Aziz and Mohammed Thabit-who were found to have been involved in the malpractices “We will push further for them to be banned from any football activity for life,” Onyonyi said.<\/p>\n

Clubs represented in yesterday’s launch were -Mahakama, Strathmore, Magongo Rangers, Mathare Youth, Bidco, KRA, Administration Police, Admiral, Nairobi Stima and Bidco among others.<\/p>\n
