Former dual-code international Jonathan Davies says Wales must rethink their attacking play if they are to punch their weight at this year’s World Cup.<\/b><\/p>\n

Wales beat Scotland, Italy and Ireland in this season’s Six Nations but began with a home loss to England and ended with a 28-9 defeat away to France. <\/p>\n

“At the moment defences are just eating us up,” Davies told Scrum V. <\/p>\n

“Again I’ve got to question our attacking play… we’ve been doing it that style for four years now.” <\/p>\n

Gatland was critical of his players after the defeat in the Stade de France, saying in his post-match interview that “they didn’t turn up mentally”. <\/p>\n

But Davies believes that the coach should have saved his comments for behind closed doors: “I don’t like people criticising their players, you’ve got to do that in the changing room. <\/p>\n

“I don’t think it was a lack of effort, I just think tactically again they got smashed in the contact area, they got counter-rucked and we didn’t adjust to it.<\/p>\n

“If things aren’t going well in the contact area then we have to have the ability to change them. <\/p>\n

“You can do anything you want on the training paddock… I don’t think they’re the players vocal enough and hard enough on each other during games.” <\/p>\n

Wales managed just six tries in their five games – the same as Scotland and Italy – while France and Ireland scored 10 and champions England 13. <\/p>\n

That is despite Warren Gatland’s side being considered as a team that prefers to play attacking, running rugby. <\/p>\n

“They say we’re trying to change it but it’s just easy to defend against. Wales say they’re trying to make mismatches but if they know what we’re doing then surely… they just wait for us,” Davies added. <\/p>\n

However, fellow BBC pundit and commentator Eddie Butler, the former Wales captain, believes there were some encouraging signs in Paris despite the defeat. <\/p>\n

“They did kick badly again but they did try and do other things, they did try and launch some counter-attacks,” Butler said. <\/p>\n

“But you’ve got to be patient, you’ve got to start rebuilding through the phases… and this is where Wales get it wrong. <\/p>\n

“When you need patience they spill the ball… out of something promising it all goes too easily pear-shaped for Wales.” <\/p>\n
