Angry youths from Oba, a community in Idemili South Local Government of Anambra State on Sunday set ablaze a police patrol van and vandalised a police post.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rampaging youths were protesting the killing of two people by policemen in the morning. They also blocked the vital Onitsha\u2013Owerri Expressway and the Oba\u2013Ichi road to underscore the seriousness of their protest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first victim of the police shooting was identified as Oghalanya, who was reported to be an Indian Hemp seller, and allegedly shot as he tried to escape police arrest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second victim, a commercial motorcycle rider, was said to have been killed by a stray bullet fired by the police, who had called for re-inforcement to dismiss the protesting youths.<\/span><\/p>\n

The youths were allegedly trying to burn a police station.<\/span><\/p>\n

A spokesman for the protesting youths, Mr. Dozie Nweke, condemned the action of the police operatives, wondering why the police should open fire on an unarmed person.<\/span><\/p>\n

But he urged the protesters not to worsen the situation by resorting to violence, as he said dialogue was the best option in conflict resolution.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, who confirmed the story, said the killings resulted from accidental discharges.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said the police on patrol were alerted that armed robbers were operating in the area, contending that the deceased were killed accidentally.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
