ASAMOAH Gyan insists he has moved on from his World Cup heartbreak as he prepares to face the \u2018cheat\u2019 who almost caused him to quit football.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sunderland\u2019s record signing goes head-to-head with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez on Sunday in their first meeting since last summer\u2019s World Cup quarter final.<\/p>\n

Uruguay ace Suarez palmed away Dominic Adiyiah\u2019s last-gasp header on the line and although he was shown a straight red card, Ghanain ace Gyan missed the resulting spot kick.<\/p>\n

The striker redeemed himself by scoring in the subsequent penalty shoot-out but Uruguay triumphed from the spot, with Suarez now a hate figure in Ghana.<\/p>\n

But the Sunderland striker insists closing the gap on sixth-placed Liverpool provides his motivation for Sunday\u2019s Stadium of Light clash rather than any retribution for Suarez.<\/p>\n

Gyan told the Gazette: \u201cI know people will be focusing on what happened in the World Cup. But it\u2019s gone, and life goes on.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about Uruguay and Ghana, it\u2019s about Liverpool and Sunderland.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are a top side, and they have their confidence back after winning a couple of games. We also need wins so it\u2019s going to be an exciting game.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuarez is like a hero in his country because he took Uruguay to the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I was him, I might have done the same thing even though he\u2019s a cheat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe referee did the right thing by sending him off and awarding a penalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe chance came and we blew it away.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe penalty doesn\u2019t affect me now. What helped was I scored the second one.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I hadn\u2019t scored that, I don\u2019t know what I\u2019d have done. I\u2019m always mentally strong, but if I hadn\u2019t scored that penalty, I\u2019d have quit football.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know what to do after missing the first one because my mind was out of the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I was fine after the second one, and relieved.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Gyan has been forgiven in his homeland for costing Ghana the chance of becoming the first African World Cup semi-finalists, Suarez has not been so fortunate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did excellently in the World Cup, and people were a bit disappointed with the penalty,\u201d added Gyan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d done everything for them, but then I missed that penalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they do understand the game, and Suarez is the most hated person in Ghana now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know whether he could ever go there.<\/p>\n

\u201cFans don\u2019t want their team to lose, and we lost because of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
