One of the executive producers of BBC3\u2019s Frankenstein\u2019s Wedding\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009Live In Leeds, he is trying to find the words to explain just how ambitious the project is. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018On the TV brave-ometer, it is pretty much off the scale,\u2019 he finally says. \u2018It\u2019s the most frightening first night of them all\u00a0 and one of the most ambitious television projects ever attempted.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Frankenstein\u2019s Wedding, a distilled version of Mary Shelley\u2019s classic tale featuring Dr Frankenstein and his laboratory creation, really does push the boundaries. Former EastEnder Lacey Turner, who plays Elizabeth, is a beacon of calm. As Stacey Branning, she starred in last year\u2019s EastEnders live episode, so knows what it\u2019s like to perform on TV without a safety net.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018My message to everyone has been: don\u2019t panic and try to enjoy every last second of the performance, because it goes so fast,\u2019 says Lacey, 22, chatting between rehearsals. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div readability=\"9\">\n<p>No wonder they look worried: Lacey Turner&#8217;s Elizabeth and Andrew Gower&#8217;s Victor have to perform Frankenstein to an audience of 12,000 which will be broadcast live on television<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Walking the course of the production is<br \/>\nDavid Harewood, the imposing Shakespearian actor, who has also had TV<br \/>\nroles such as Friar Tuck in the BBC\u2019s recent Robin Hood. He is preparing<br \/>\nfor his grand entrance as the Creature in the Abbey\u2019s graveyard. David,<br \/>\n45, says he\u2019s not remotely insulted at being asked to play<br \/>\nFrankenstein\u2019s creation, described in Mary Shelley\u2019s 1818 novel as a<br \/>\nmonster, a fiend, a wretch, a vile insect and an abhorred devil. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Hollywood\u2019s<br \/>\nidea of the Creature was a monster with a bolt through his neck who<br \/>\ncouldn\u2019t speak,\u2019 says David. \u2018That\u2019s a total fabrication. Dr<br \/>\nFrankenstein actually seeks to create the perfect human specimen who<br \/>\nread Milton\u2019s Paradise Lost and spoke fluent French.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Some of<br \/>\nthis perfection will have worn off by the time the audience first sees<br \/>\nhim. His body will have started to degrade \u2014 the consequence of the<br \/>\nchemicals used by Frankenstein to create him \u2014 by the time the live<br \/>\naction starts. <\/p>\n<p>David will spend more than two hours in the make-up chair as his body<br \/>\nis slowly transformed by prosthetics into a gory mix of skin, blood and<br \/>\nsinew.<\/p>\n<p>Newcomer Andrew Gower, who plays Dr Frankenstein, is darting around<br \/>\nthe abbey\u2019s passageways, eager to establish the shortest route from his<br \/>\ncharacter\u2019s laboratory to the church. \u2018I have a scene in the laboratory<br \/>\nfollowed immediately by one in the church, and the distance between the<br \/>\ntwo is pretty much the entire length of the abbey,\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n<p>Lacey Turner, meanwhile, has plenty of opportunity to try on her character\u2019s wedding dress. It\u2019s a plain, white Thirties-style Amanda Wakeley number that fits like a glove. \u2018It\u2019s simple, beautiful and elegant. But no, it hasn\u2019t given me a sudden desire to walk up the aisle for real \u2014 I\u2019m still a baby!\u2019 says Lacey.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the BBC will enjoy a happy ending tomorrow remains to be seen. But Meredith Chambers thinks he\u2019s ready for anything \u2014 including bad weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We will try to make a virtue of what the elements throw at us \u2014 whether it\u2019s hail, snow, wind or rain. I think we\u2019ll have the most wonderful experience, and I\u2019m sure the audience will too. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I reckon we\u2019ll get away with it.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Frankenstein\u2019s Wedding .\u2009.\u2009.
