{"id":311893,"date":"2011-03-15T18:57:30","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T18:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/15\/us-fed-signals-no-change-in-rates\/"},"modified":"2011-03-15T18:57:30","modified_gmt":"2011-03-15T18:57:30","slug":"us-fed-signals-no-change-in-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/15\/us-fed-signals-no-change-in-rates\/","title":{"rendered":"US Fed signals no change in rates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"63.647327249\">\n        \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>15 March 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>15:08 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Reserve has signalled no change to US interest rates, which will remain near zero.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed also said it would continue with a $600bn (\u00a3375bn) Treasury bond-purchase plan to strengthen the US economy.<\/p>\n<p>The vote by members of the bank&#8217;s rate-setting committee, the Federal Open Market Committee, was unanimous. <\/p>\n<p>The Federal Reserve made no mention of Friday&#8217;s earthquake in Japan, and how that might affect the global recovery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In light of the ongoing crisis in Japan and uncertainty about financial and economic repercussions yet to come, the Fed is firmly and unanimously in wait-and-see mode,&#8221; said analyst Chris Low of FTN Financial in New York.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extended period<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bank&#8217;s decision to keep interest rates unchanged had been widely predicted.<\/p>\n<p>However, its rate-setting committee said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/press\/monetary\/20110315a.htm\">statement<\/a> that it believed &#8220;the economic recovery is on a firmer footing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed also noted the recent rise in energy and commodity prices, but said it expected &#8220;these effects to be transitory&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank reiterated a previous warning that economic conditions were &#8220;likely to warrant exceptionally low levels for the federal funds rate for an extended period&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The federal funds rate has remained unchanged, at a record low of zero to 0.25%, since December 2008.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Here is the original post:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/business-12752153\" title=\"US Fed signals no change in rates\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US Fed signals no change in rates<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 15 March 2011 Last updated at 15:08 ET The Federal Reserve has signalled no change to US interest rates, which will remain near zero.
