Firstly let’s look back to last week and the win for Nick Watney in the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral. He’s obviously been knocking at the door this season and had gone so close to winning this event in 2009 so what odds did you have him pre-tournament and was he well backed?

JR: As you say he was in very good form this year with four top 10s under his belt, and I thought the course would be right up Watney’s street as his second place behind Mickelson in 2009 showed. He went off 20/1 and, amazingly, he was completely unfancied, almost to the extent that he had lost his clubs in the final round, he was that friendless! A fantastic week for the bookies I’m afraid to say for the punters!

Skysports.com: Watney was already in many people’s thoughts for The Masters given his good record there. I guess you’ve cut his Augusta odds after this win?

JR: Most definitely, he has the game to win around Augusta, with his slight draw of the ball, and already has three high finishes on the course. At the start of 2011 he opened up 40/1, and is into as little as 18/1, and will go to the first major of the year in high spirits and in great nick.

Skysports.com: It was weird to see Martin Kaymer at the front of the betting last week given that Tiger was in the field. I know he’s the world number one but were people honestly backing Kaymer at single figure odds in a WGC event on US soil?

JR: Kaymer wasn’t that well backed pre event at 9/1. I think it was more the fact that Woods, Mickelson and Westwood have all had disappointing starts to the season, and the fact Kaymer was third in 2010 and was runner-up in the WGC Matchplay that made him start at the head of affairs. He was extremely popular during the first two rounds and traded as low as 11/4. At one point he was our worst loser in the book.

Skysports.com: Tiger was 12/1 with you last week. Do you think that may be as high as it gets or will you dare push him out further as long as his winless streak continues?

JR: He was fairly unpopular as well last week, but his closing 66 may have the layers running for cover. As you say, 12/1 could be the highest he gets for a while, as the upcoming events for him will be the Bay Hill event where he has won numerous times, followed by Augusta, so he will definitely go off single figures for both those events.

Skysports.com: Tiger is getting all the flak for not playing well but what about Phil Mickelson? He hit just four greens in regulation on Sunday, finished out with the washing and hasn’t won anywhere since last year’s Masters. Do you think Lefty’s season is just about majors these days and are you happy to keep laying him in regular tournaments?

JR: Most definitely. I know you yourself had a motto of backing Mickelson when he got to 16/1 or bigger, but the way he is playing at the moment you wouldn’t back him at 33/1! His season is most certainly based around the majors, and he usually hones his game. I remember the week before last year’s Augusta win, he used two drivers – one to fade and one to draw – during the Texas Open, the week prior.

Skysports.com: A quick mention of the other event last week which saw Michael Bradley win the Puerto Rico Open for the second time in three years. And yet I see he went off at a big price.

JR: Yeah, I was 80/1 and saw 150/1 about in a place, but to be honest it was less popular than the European Seniors event in China which I priced up! Punters just weren’t interested at all! Funny player is Bradley, as past form goes, for the rest of 2011 I reckon he won’t have another top 10 finish. Must be something in the Puerto Rican air that he likes!

Skysports.com: The PGA Tour continues in Florida this week with The Transitions Championship. Kaymer and Watney are back for more so how do you price that one up?

JR: 10/1 both Kaymer and Watney, and 25/1 bar those two. Looks a solid enough event, with plenty of course specialists in the field, who keep coming back to Innisbrook and playing well each year.

Skysports.com: The European Tour resumes this week with the Sicilian Open. It’s a pretty low key field so who do you make favourite?

JR: As you say a low key event, surprisingly with the three Italian stallions – the Molinari brothers and Manassero – all skipping the event. It should see the chance for one of the tour’s journeymen to get some silverware. Still maiden Chris Wood, and the resurgent Scot Stephen Gallacher head the market at 20/1, but I would expect that to be a quite affair, with the better event in Florida at the Traditions.

Skysports.com: Back to Augusta again and how is your ante-post book looking? Who would be your worst loser at this stage?

JR: It’s looking pretty healthy take wise with a good spread of players being backed. But as with all ante-post golf events, we only lay the players who are in form, so the 2011 winners like Watney (18 from 40), Bubba Watson (40 from 80), and players who have played well this year including Vijay Singh (55 from 125) and Matt Kuchar (33 from 80) have all been well backed.

Finally John, where is your money going this week and why?

JR: The old adage keeps popping into my head that I “couldn’t tip a bucket of water” at the moment! In Sicily it’s hard to pick a winner with not much information on the course, or any past form to go on, so my suggestion would be to wait and play in running. In the Transitions I think it would be wise to stick with players with course form – the likes of Byrd, Choi, Goosen, Howell etc all have loads of form around the track. One you liked in your betting preview is Troy Matteson, who has been second here and lost in a play-off last week. He could go well at an appealing 125/1.

John Rhodes was speaking to Dave Tindall.

Read More:
Rhodes To Profit

["post-311360","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
