The idea of using football to promote the development of the youth in Cape Coast through the street league concept has been introduced by the FIFA-supported Oguaa Football for Hope Centre to the Cape Coast communities.

The Oguaa Football for Hope Centre, which is managed by Play Soccer Ghana, a non-profit-making organization with an office in Cape Coast, has already started developing and implementing programs within the Cape Coast Metropolis.

The idea of using football to link under-privileged youth to vocational and other skills within the Cape Coast Metropolis was welcomed by participants present at a Sensitization forum on the Oguaaman Street League Concept.

The Oguaman Street League is one of the programs to be implemented at the Oguaa Football for Hope Centre and as part of the preparation to ensure the implementation of the concept, a sensitization programme with stakeholders was held at VAG Guest House in Cape Coast over the weekend. The program was to brief participants about the aims and objectives of the Street League concept. In attendance were assembly members from the various communities as well as media houses in Cape Coast.

Mr. Wahab Musah, the manager of Oguaa Football For Hope Centre, said the construction of the centre, which is a legacy project of the 2010 World Cup in Africa by FIFA, is expected to be completed in five months. The centre, when completed would involve facilities for health, education and an artificial football turf, he noted.

The centre manager disclosed that the aim of the street league concept is to connect the participants in this league with complimentary activities and services from the community to further their personal health and development as productive, engaged citizens. He further emphasized that the centre is acting as a springboard and will serve as a referral point to various service providers.

According to Mr. Wahab, “this recreational league will serve as a social gathering mechanism to bring young people into the centre learning space and help them find the necessary support services and tools to integrate them as well-adjusted citizens in the community”.

The administrator of the centre, Mr. Haruna K. Mohammed gave out the structure of the league, which he said, will be open to all young disadvantaged youth, both male and female between the ages of 10-15 as well as 16 to 30 years and it’s a six-a-side mixed-gender league that combines life skills development and soccer matches.

The selection of participants to the league will be done from April 2 to April 30, 2011. Players will be selected within the communities targeting school dropouts, crime-prone youth and homeless children among others.

Other speakers of the occasion were Vincent Ohene, Central Regional Programme Manager of Play Soccer Ghana and Mr. Albert K. Bonney, Metropolitan P.E. Coordinator (GES), who spoke on grass root development and healthy life styles respectively.
