Inter are the last remaining hope for Serie A in this season’s Champions League, and they face an uphill task after their first-leg defeat against Bayern Munich to keep the Italian flag waving in Europe in 2010-11.

The irony comes in that for years before their success last season, the Nerazzurri were considered one of the laughing stocks of the tournament – the ultimate pretender, created by a president in Massimo Moratti that spent millions trying to replicate his father’s success.

Across the previous decade, Inter were defeated at the quarter-final stage in Manchester United’s march to the treble in 1999, while they fared one better in 2003 making it to the semi-finals but were beaten by eventual winners and rivals Milan on away goals – with three years in between where they did not even qualify for the competition.

After that, the wheels fell off entirely and they crashed out in the group stages in 2003-04 after a draw with Dynamo Kiev in their final match in a section that also contained Lokomtoiv Moscow and Arsenal. One year later, they were beaten by Milan again, this time in the last eight, and were also being punished by UEFA after a firecracker struck opposition goalkeeper Dida. Roberto Mancini’s Inter incarnation consistently and embarrassingly underperformed, losing to inferior opposition in Villarreal and Valencia before being ousted convincingly by future boss Rafael Benitez’s Liverpool in 2008.

Jose Mourinho’s first attempt at continental silverware with the club was ended by Sir Alex Ferguson a decade after he had previously orchestrated their demise, but we all know that in 2010, ‘The Special One’ and Inter became European champions once again.

Just like last season, Inter are Italy’s final representatives in the competition. Fiorentina and Milan bowed out in the last 16 one year ago, and this campaign the Rossoneri were joined by Roma in a relatively early egress.

Despite the Italian exodus, Inter prevailed, forging on to a famous triumph to be crowned kings of Europe for the first time in over 40 years, and now with Leonardo in charge the weight of a country is on the Beneamata’s shoulders once more to do the same.

With Italy having lost their fourth Champions League spot to Germany for the 2012-13 season, a triumph over Bayern Munich would drive home the notion that Serie A’s demise is greatly exaggerated. It’s a matter of honour for the Nerazzurri and indeed all Italians, dreaming that their final team can produce an inspiring tale of the underdog constructing a brilliant comeback.

Hope, pride, prestige, egos, and more ride on Inter’s performance in the mammoth clash with the Bavarians, just as it did last season. The question is whether it will be case of ‘cometh the hour – cometh Inter’ yet again.
