Says U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"43.9417054264\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/><!-- close google_banner_mid div ---><\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/9c3e48a3llafrica180.jpg\" alt=\"allAfrica.com\" title=\"Visit allAfrica.com\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p><!-- begin story layout piece here --><\/p>\n<p>15 March 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Washington, DC \u2014 Kenyans accused of responsibility for the violence which followed the 2007 elections must answer for their crimes in front of a judicial body, the top U.S. official responsible for policy on Africa has told AllAfrica.<\/p>\n<p>In an exclusive interview, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Johnnie Carson indicated that the Obama administration would not agree at the United Nations Security Council to Kenya\u2019s request that the pending trial of Kenyan leaders at the International Criminal Court (ICC) be deferred.<\/p>\n<p><!-- close google_inset_a div ---><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me make it very clear that we are not in favor of\u2026 [a deferral],\u201d he said. \u201cIt is time for that process of accountability through an agreed-upon legal mechanism to be established so that justice replaces impunity and violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccountability must be in a process that is open, legally responsible and binding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carson said the United States believed that \u201cthe only way to heal the wounds of the past and to create the environment for peace and stability in Kenya is for those individuals who are accused of having engaged in the post-electoral violence to answer to those crimes in front of a judicial body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo has named six Kenyan leaders \u2013 three from each of two groups involved in the violence \u2013 as major perpetrators of ethnically-based \u201ccrimes against humanity,\u201d including rape, murder and land seizures in post election violence in 2007 and 2008.<\/p>\n<p><!-- end story layout piece here --><\/p>\n<p><!-- close google_banner_subbody div ---><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><b>More News on allAfrica.com<\/b><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211;
