DALLAS (AP)\u2014Dirk Nowitzki<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> insisted he saw right through coach Rick
\nCarlisle\u2019s motivational ploy. Tyson Chandler<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> said it didn\u2019t bother him one bit.<\/p>\n

Sure thing, guys. It had to be something else that turned the Dallas
\nMavericks<\/a> from \u201csoft\u201d one night to as dominant as they\u2019ve been all season the
\nnext.<\/p>\n

Nowitzki scored 23 points, Shawn Marion<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> added 22 while playing with ribs so
\nsore he wasn\u2019t sure if he\u2019d play a half hour before tipoff and Jason Terry<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> had
\n21 and the Mavericks ended a string of disappointing games with a 127-109 rout
\nof the New York Knicks<\/a> on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t win them all so you have to come back the next day and compete
\nand that\u2019s what we did today,\u201d Nowitzki said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t run away with it, but
\nat least we didn\u2019t let them right back in it. We were still able to close it
\nout, so it was definitely a good win.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the three previous games, Dallas let a pair of big leads melt into
\none-point losses and narrowly beat lowly Minnesota. Carlisle was so frustrated
\nthat he dropped the s-word on his club after a loss to New Orleans on Wednesday
\nnight. It\u2019s especially damning for a club that\u2019s often been described that way
\nwhile seeing a decade of 50-win seasons result in zero championships.<\/p>\n

Carlisle obviously did it to see how his club would respond. He had to like
\nthe answer: season highs for points in a quarter (41), half (72) and game. The
\n18-point margin of victory was a point shy of their best, and it came against a
\nNew York club that had won three in a row.<\/p>\n

\u201cA win is a great response, to anything,\u201d Marion said. \u201cWhat more can you
\nask? No reason to dwell on it. \u2026 We all get caught up in the heat of the
\nmoment at times. That\u2019s what he felt at the time. You\u2019ve just got to learn from
\nit and do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carlisle was pleased.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought we really attacked,\u201d he said. \u201cOverall, I thought it was a
\nreally good effort, and it was a good win for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mavs needed this not only to scrub the bitter taste of the past few
\ndays, but also to reboot for what\u2019s coming next: the Lakers on Saturday night in
\na showdown for second place in the Western Conference (Dallas has a 1 1\/2 game
\nlead), followed by games at Portland and Golden State, then at home against the
\nrival Spurs.<\/p>\n

New York\u2019s Amare Stoudemire<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> scored 36 points while playing through a bruised
\nleft shoulder sustained in the opening minutes. Despite needing ice during
\ntimeouts, he scored 18 points in the third quarter to prevent the Mavericks from
\npulling away.<\/p>\n

He also picked up his 16th technical foul, which would trigger an automatic
\none-game suspension if it\u2019s upheld. It was a marginal call, so it could become
\nthe third time this season he gets a tech revoked by the league office.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel confident they can rescind it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe laughed about it
\nlater and the official agreed with us it wasn\u2019t that bad. \u2026 We got tangled up,
\nthat\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Landry Fields<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> scored 19 points and Toney Douglas<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> added 18; those guards were
\nthe only New York players to make more than half their shots. Carmelo Anthony<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span>
\nhad 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one of those things, and we were just tired at the start,\u201d coach
\nMike D\u2019Antoni said. \u201cAmare was huge in the second half. There was no quit in
\nhim. He played. But they just beat us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dallas blew an 18-point lead at home Sunday against Memphis, then let a
\nseven-point lead get away in the final minute against the Hornets. This time,
\nthe lead peaked at 26 midway through the third quarter and was cut in half
\nwithin a few minutes. The Mavs regained control, however.<\/p>\n

They showed plenty of feistiness on both ends of the court, from newly added
\nreserve Corey Brewer<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> making a pair of backcourt steals\u2014the first leading to a
\npowerful dunk\u2014to Jason Kidd<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> turning an errant pass headed out of bounds into a
\nthree-point play for Brendan Haywood<\/a>(notes)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dallas\u2019 defense limited the Knicks to making 43 percent of their shots. The
\nMavs made 51 percent. Their effort showed up in other areas, too, such as 30
\nsecond-chance points and grabbing 10 more rebounds.<\/p>\n

Marion was a surprise starter, both because Carlisle likes him coming off
\nthe bench and because he hurt his ribs while absorbing a flagrant foul the night
\nbefore. He made 10 of 15 shots and grabbed eight rebounds in 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

Nowitzki was only 7 of 19, but added nine rebounds. Rodrigue Beaubois<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> had 14
\npoints and six assists. Haywood had 12 points and eight rebounds in extended
\nplaying time because Chandler got in foul trouble. Chandler still added nine
\npoints and eight rebounds.<\/p>\n

Notes: This capped a stretch of four games in five days for Dallas, seven
\ngames in 10 days for New York. \u2026 The Knicks have lost 17 of 19 to the
