{"id":297101,"date":"2011-03-09T23:52:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-09T23:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/09\/cpc-petitions-inec-over-alleged-30000-fake-polling-units\/"},"modified":"2011-03-09T23:52:00","modified_gmt":"2011-03-09T23:52:00","slug":"cpc-petitions-inec-over-alleged-30000-fake-polling-units","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/09\/cpc-petitions-inec-over-alleged-30000-fake-polling-units\/","title":{"rendered":"CPC petitions INEC over alleged 30,000 fake polling units"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"105\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has petitioned Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, over alleged non-existence of 30,000polling units in some parts of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a letter to Jega, the CPC\u2019s National Votes Guards and Awareness Organisation said the issue was capable of derailing next month\u2019s elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u00a0March 1 petition \u00a0and signed by the National Coordinator of the organisation, Mr Mohammad Kailani, was made available to reporters in Kaduna yesterday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It alleged that CPC, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and other pressure groups had identified non-existent polling centres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOf the 120,000 polling units declared by INEC for the general elections, 30,000 \u00a0are found to be non-existent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis figure was arrived at after thorough research, investigations and calculations conducted by us-CPC, ACN and other stakeholders, including civil society groups,\u2019\u2019 the petition read in part.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The CPC claimed that the number of polling centres in some electoral wards were reduced without any explanation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It said, for instance, Rigasa ward in Igabi federal constituency of Kaduna State, with an estimated population of two million, with 126 voting units, was reduced to 26 without any reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The group pointed out that the stage was set for a monumental electoral fraud if INEC failed to address these issues before the polls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs a body that wants to ensure free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria, we hereby advice INEC to take immediate corrective measures,\u201d CPC urged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>CPC suggested that INEC \u00a0should conduct a physical census of its polling units in order to eliminate the 30,000 non-existing ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It also recommended the removal or relocation of \u00a0\u201call illegal polling units located at the palaces of emirs, obas, obis, chiefs and houses of party chieftains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The party said such polling units should be relocated to places where elections could be conducted \u201ctransparently\u2019\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Besides, CPC urged INEC to collaborate with media houses and security agencies to publicise, enforce laws regulating election rules and prohibit the circulation and use of arms during electioneering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A bomb explosion occurred on March 3 in Suleja in Niger State during Governor Babaginda Aliyu in which six persons 10 died. 12 others were hospitalised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/88606cf0thumbnail.php_17.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Follow this link:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thenationonlineng.net\/web3\/news\/30368.html\" title=\"CPC petitions INEC over alleged 30,000 fake polling units\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CPC petitions INEC over alleged 30,000 fake polling units<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> \u00a0 The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has petitioned Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, over alleged non-existence of 30,000polling units in some parts of the country<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-297101","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
