If everything goes as planned, The Gambia will host the 2013 World Draught Championship in Banjul that will attract at least 40 best draught players the world over.

This development was disclosed to journalists Tuesday evening by the president of the International Draught Federation, Harry AFM Otten, who called on the president of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh at State House. The IDF chief was accompanied to the seat of the presidency by the newly elected president of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) Momodou Dibba, who also doubles as the president of the Gambia Draught Association.

Otten, who described the closed-door meeting with the Gambian leader as fruitful, disclosed that he President Jammeh has pledged “all support” to the organisation of the World Draught Championship in 2013 in The Gambia. The proposed competition, he added will bring to Banjul 40 best draught players of the world from Asia, Americas, Africa and so on to contest for the title. He added: “We are going to announce it in the General Assembly of the International Draught Federation that will be held in the Netherlands in May this year because the world championship is held every two years. This year, it is in the Netherlands on the occasion of the 100 years Anniversary of the Federation.” The IDF chief disclosed that they hope to organise the competition in July, 2013 to coincide with the 22nd July Revolution Anniversary celebrations. Otten also disclosed that his discussion with the president also delved into the necessary means or strategies to make Gambian draught stronger especially by encouraging the youths to build interest in the game for future prospects.

Also speaking to reporters, the GNOC and Gambia Draught Association chief, Momodou Dibba, told the journalists they have been very much encouraged after the closed-door meeting with the Gambian leader, hinting that he President Jammeh is very much supportive and has opened up everything for them to ensure that the hosting is successful. He hailed President Jammeh for giving his approval for The Gambia to host such a major sporting convergence, while underscoring that such an event will be a historic moment for the country. “I am very proud as a Gambian for having a head of state who is so kind and so generous in accepting we host the world championship in 2013,” Dibba added.

Asked if they will be able to mobilise a competent team to participate in such a competition, Dibba said: “He the president has given us the usual advice and it is important for the Draught Association to start gearing up knowing that our counterparts in Senegal, Cameron, Mali have very strong teams. But nonetheless I don’t think we should just sit on our laurels.”
