DETROIT (AP)\u2014Kevin Smith<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> wasn\u2019t surprised the Detroit Lions<\/a> chose not to
\noffer him a contract. The running back just hopes the NFL labor deal gets done
\nsoon so he can find a new home in the league.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope it goes through so I can move on,\u201d Smith said Friday in a
\ntelephone interview with The Associated Press. \u201cUntil then, I\u2019m just waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n

A person familiar with the situation also told AP the Lions released
\nlinebacker Julian Peterson<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> and tendered contracts to kicker Dave Rayner<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span>
\nlinebacker Zach Follett and fullback Jerome Felton<\/a>(notes)<\/a>.<\/span> The person spoke on
\ncondition of anonymity because the team hasn\u2019t announced the moves.<\/p>\n

The Lions did confirm they re-signed cornerback Nathan Vasher<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> to a one-year
\ndeal. The team has also tendered contracts to quarterback Drew Stanton<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> and
\nsafety John Wendling<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> and did not tender cornerback Brandon McDonald<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> according
\nto agents for those three players.<\/p>\n

Stanton began the season as Detroit\u2019s No. 3 quarterback but ended up
\nstarting three games because of injuries to Matthew Stafford<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> and Shaun Hill<\/a>(notes)<\/a>.<\/span> The
\nLions won two of his starts.<\/p>\n

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said shortly after last season that
\nPeterson wouldn\u2019t be back with the team.<\/p>\n

The five-time Pro Bowler fell out of favor toward the end of his second
\nseason with the Lions, leading to him being inactive for the finale without an
\napparent injury. He started 14 games last year, ranking second on the team in
\ntackles, and started 14 games in 2009 after Detroit acquired him from Seattle
\nfor defensive tackle Cory Redding<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> and a fifth-round pick.<\/p>\n

The San Francisco 49ers<\/a> drafted Peterson with the 16th overall pick in 2000
\nafter he starred at Michigan State and traded him after six seasons to the
\nSeahawks.<\/p>\n

Detroit drafted Smith in the third round in 2008 and he ran for nearly 1,000
\nyards and caught 39 passes as a rookie.<\/p>\n

Smith accounted for 1,000-plus yards of offense in 13 games of his second
\nseason before tearing the ACL in his left knee. He came back slowly last season
\nand played in six games, running for 51 yards in a win over Washington, then had
\na season-ending thumb injury in November.<\/p>\n

\u201cI respect the Lions\u2019 decision,\u201d Smith said. \u201cNothing surprises me in
\nthis business, but what I\u2019m really hoping for is a deal to avoid this lockout.\u201d<\/p>\n
