NEW YORK (AP)\u2014Former New York Giants<\/a> Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> is to
\nget out of prison in June, after officials agreed Friday to shave about three
\nmonths off his time behind bars in a gun case.<\/p>\n

A committee of prison-system staffers decided Burress was eligible for time
\noff for good behavior, so he can be freed after serving about 21 months of his
\ntwo-year sentence, system spokeswoman Linda Foglia said.<\/p>\n

With Burress\u2019 release date now set for June 6, his agent and lawyer said
\nhe\u2019s looking to return to football\u2014and a number of teams are looking at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s counting the hours,\u201d lawyer Peter M. Frankel said. \u201cHe\u2019s extremely
\npositive.\u201d<\/p>\n

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has ruled that Burress would be reinstated
\nand eligible to sign with a team upon completing his sentence. While the league
\nand players are locked in negotiations that have cast a shadow of uncertainty
\nover the sport\u2019s next season, Frankel and Burress agent Drew Rosenhaus said
\nseveral teams had expressed interest in the receiver.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe future is very bright for Plaxico,\u201d Rosenhaus said in an e-mail.<\/p>\n

Burress, 33, caught the winning touchdown for the Giants over the New
\nEngland Patriots<\/a> in the final minute of the 2008 Super Bowl. But his fortunes
\nturned in November of that year, when he went to a Manhattan nightclub with a
\ngun tucked in the waistband of his track pants; he later said he had been
\nconcerned for his safety because a teammate had been held up at gunpoint days
\nbefore.<\/p>\n

Burress\u2019 weapon slipped down his leg and fired, injuring him in the thigh.
\nThe bullet narrowly missed a security guard, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

The gun wasn\u2019t licensed in New York or New Jersey, where Burress lived, and
\nhis Florida concealed-weapons permit had expired. He also failed to report the
\nincident to authorities.<\/p>\n

He pleaded guilty in August 2009 to attempted criminal possession of a
\nweapon.<\/p>\n

Held in protective custody at an upstate prison because of his notoriety,
\nBurress was turned down twice in bids for work release. The Manhattan District
\nAttorney\u2019s Office, which opposed work release for Burress, declined to comment
\non Friday\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

Burress had a work assignment in prison and completed an anger management
\nprogram while incarcerated, his lawyer said.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s been tagged with three minor disciplinary problems, including an
\nepisode in which corrections officers said Burress lied about having permission
\nto use the phone to call his lawyer at a time when calls weren\u2019t permitted,
\nFoglia said. The November 2009 misstep cost him a week of phone privileges and
\n30 days of recreation privileges.<\/p>\n

Details on the other two incidents weren\u2019t immediately available, but none
\nwas seen as serious enough to trim his time off for good behavior. His June
\nrelease date is the earliest allowed under a state law that required him to
\nserve at least six-sevenths of his sentence.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s done his best to abide by\u201d prison rules, Frankel said.<\/p>\n

Giants general manager Jerry Reese has said the team will keep its options
\nopen with Burress.<\/p>\n

For now, \u201cwe are grateful that Plaxico and his wife, Tiffany, and their
\nchildren now know when they will be reunited and able to get on with their lives
\ntogether,\u201d team spokesman Pat Hanlon said. \u201cAs we have stated many times in
\nthe past, we feel that day is long overdue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Giants placekicker Lawrence Tynes<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> said in an e-mail to The Associated Press
\nthat he thinks of Burress often because his sons attend the same school as
\nBurress\u2019 son.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe deserves to be back in the NFL and if that opportunity comes from the
\nNew York Giants then he will be welcomed back with open arms from us in the
\nlocker room,\u201d said Tynes, who was on the Super Bowl championship team with
\nBurress. \u201cI\u2019ve always personally wondered why the Giants never issued his No.
\n17 jersey to anyone over the past two seasons. If it happens to be with another
\nfranchise then I hope he has nothing but good health and success.\u201d<\/p>\n
