The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, has charged officers and men of the Nigerian Army to avoid inducement by politicians to ensure that they do not compromise their role in ensuring a free and fair election in the forthcoming elections.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ihejirika, who gave the order at the 302 Artillery Regiment in Onitsha during his nationwide familiarisation tour, disclosed that the Army will soon publish the code of conduct for soldiers during the election, warning that any officer or soldier found wanting will be accordingly dealt with.<\/span><\/p>\n

The COAS, who was accompanied by the GOC 82 Division Enugu, Major-Gen. Sarkin Bello, and other top Army officers, hinted that the visit was to further familiarise with the workings and readiness of the units. He disclosed that his mission is to transform the Nigerian Army to meet the diverse security issues facing the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

“My mission is to reposition the Army to meet with contemporary challenges of diverse security issues facing the country where the Army is invited to help the Police restore law and order,” He said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He assured that the salaries and other entitlements of officers and soldiers, will henceforth be paid correctly as and when due, adding that this will motivate the men for optimal performance. He urged them to immediately report any delay in accessing their salaries to their superiors .<\/span><\/p>\n

He prided that the Nigerian Army has lived up to its constitutional responsibility of protecting and defending the unity and sovereignty of the nation. In the South East, he said, the Army has succeeded in containing the kidnapping menace; the Army is seriously involved in the management of religious and ethnic crises in Jos and the issue of Boko Haram in Bauchi.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
