Counsel to Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State during the disputed 2007 governorship elections in the state, Mallam Yusuf Olaolu Ali (SAN) has dragged the immediate past governor of the state, Chief Segun Oni to an Ilorin High Court.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also joined in the suit is the Western Publishing Company Ltd, the publishers of Nigerian Compass<\/em> newspapers and Westerner<\/em> Magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ali, an Ilorin-based legal practitioner, has approached the court to complain that his credibility has been badly damaged by the claims by Oni on the controversial call logs between the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami and parties in the legal tussle over the Ekiti State gubernatorial election that was eventually decided by the appellate court in favour of Dr. Kayode Fayemi.<\/span><\/p>\n

He is, therefore, demanding for a sum of N4 billion from defendants in the suit as well as an order of injunction stopping the second defendant from further publishing and circulating the said items.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also seeks an order of the court directing the defendants to publish suitable apology in terms acceptable to the claimants in three newspapers to be specified by the court.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a-27 paragraph affidavit deposed to by himself, Ali argued that the first defendant (Oni) had “wilfully, wickedly, maliciously and falsely published untrue and defamatory words” against him and made same available for publication by the second defendant in its edition of Tuesday February 22, 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n

He further claimed that the first defendant “in further prosecution of his unjust assault on the claimant also posted or caused to be posted on the internet inclusive of the site of Sahara Reporter<\/em> among other sites the said wicked publication thereby making it possible for same to be read beyond the shores of Nigeria.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
