It was particularly alarming because all my life I\u2019d enjoyed doing all my own stunts in shows, taking on every physical challenge. Yet suddenly, I\u2019d become like a very old man. I knew something was wrong, but I had no idea what.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Eventually he was diagnosed with ME, the rare chronic fatigue syndrome that can be triggered by a viral infection. The next step was to find out what had brought it on, and once the cause was pinpointed beyond doubt, he realised he had no one to blame but himself.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As we sit between shows in his Palladium dressing room, Michael recalls those dark times. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018In 2004, I was on the West End stage in The Woman In White, and for every show I had to climb into a fat suit to play the obese Count Fosco. It was hard work, and unbearably hot, but I sailed through because I\u2019d always kept myself fit. <\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Four months into the run, I began to feel really unwell. I went<br \/>\nfor all sorts of brain and body scans until ME was finally diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I was told by the doctors that it was all down to the Count Fosco<br \/>\nsuit. It had made me sweat so much that I had become dangerously<br \/>\ndehydrated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I\u2019d been losing too many nutrients from my body, and the water I\u2019d been swigging wasn\u2019t enough to replace them. With no nutrients to sustain me, I had become vulnerable to a virus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;My immune system had broken down and this led to ME. Ironically, I\u2019d helped design that rubber costume, and it had been like stepping into a sauna for three hours every night. I look back on it now and realise that creating that suit was one of the worst ideas I ever had.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Nothing seemed to cure him, so he prescribed himself constant sunshine and moved to New Zealand, living in a small house near Auckland.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018For two years, I didn\u2019t feel well at all. Then I changed my entire regime, putting myself on a diet of healthy food and taking each day at a time, rather than worrying about the future. He<br \/>\ngot lots of tempting offers to return to performing, but was enjoying<br \/>\nhis stress-free life too much to get back on stage \u2013 \u2018where I\u2019d always<br \/>\npushed myself to the limit, and look what good it had done me.<br \/>\nObviously, quitting did cross my mind but I thought, no, I still love<br \/>\nwhat I\u2019ve been doing all my life. There\u2019s nothing else I would want to<br \/>\ndo.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Then, last summer, everything changed. He had arranged to rent a<br \/>\nvilla in Sicily and invite his extended family \u2013 his two daughters, Emma<br \/>\nand Lucy, his five grandchildren, and his ex-wife Gabrielle, with whom<br \/>\nhe has remained friendly since their divorce in 1975, and her two sons<br \/>\nfrom a previous relationship. <\/p>\n<p>Just before he was due to go, he got a call to say that Andrew Lloyd<br \/>\nWebber wanted him to play the title role in the Wizard Of Oz. He asked<br \/>\nfor time to think about it, and watched the original classic film<br \/>\nstarring Judy Garland. \u2018I was intrigued because the Wizard appears in so<br \/>\nmany guises. He morphs into a doorman, a carriage-driver and the kindly<br \/>\nold fortune-teller Professor Marvel. <\/p>\n<p>&#8216;By the time I got to Sicily and spent two weeks with the grandchildren, I was so fired up with the fun I was having with them that it actually persuaded me I wanted to do it,\u2019 he says. \u2018They were the ones who swung it. They had seen me as Frank Spencer in Some Mothers Do \u2019Ave \u2019Em, but they\u2019d never seen me perform on stage, so I really did it for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018They came to watch one of the previews and they were speechless, because they\u2019d only ever known a sort of serious Poppa, which is what they call me. Afterwards, I was told by the oldest boy, who\u2019s 14, \u201cOh Poppa, you were wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<div readability=\"7\">\n<p><span>I used to do all my own stunts. But suddenly I&#8217;d become like a very old man <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8216;You learn so much from them and they had a lot to do with my<br \/>\nrecovery. I just seemed to get better when I\u2019d taken my mind off<br \/>\nthings.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>His association with Lloyd Webber had begun when he took on the title role in The Phantom Of The Opera in 1986. <\/p>\n<p>Crawford then had a five-year run in Las Vegas in the<br \/>\nmulti-million-pound solo spectacle EFX, another outstanding success that<br \/>\nearned him a fortune. But he ended up suffering two crippling falls and<br \/>\neventually had to have a hip joint replaced. <\/p>\n<p>Then came The Woman In White (also a Lloyd Webber musical) \u2013 and<br \/>\ndisaster. \u2018Andrew and I kept in touch and he\u2019s asked me to do several<br \/>\nthings before, but I\u2019ve never really been able to until now.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The Wizard Of Oz has taken \u00a311 million in advance ticket sales and<br \/>\nCrawford is contracted to spend at least six months in the show. \u2018I\u2019m<br \/>\nnot on stage all the time, and I\u2019ve only got a couple of big musical<br \/>\nnumbers, but it\u2019s a good way of getting back after such a long absence.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He is full of praise for 18-year-old Danielle Hope, who won the role<br \/>\nof Dorothy in BBC1\u2019s talent show Over The Rainbow. \u2018This girl is quite<br \/>\nextraordinary,\u2019 he says. \u2018I\u2019ve never seen talent like it in someone so<br \/>\nyoung.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Now in his 70th year, Crawford has been performing for some 50 years.<br \/>\nBrought up in Sheerness, Kent, he began at 12 as a boy soprano, left<br \/>\nschool three years later and embarked on a career in film, stage and TV<br \/>\nalongside such stars as Gene Kelly, Barbra Streisand, Buster Keaton,<br \/>\nJohn Lennon and Steve McQueen. <\/p>\n<p>He was christened Michael Patrick Dumbell-Smith, and only discovered years later that the Battle of Britain pilot Arthur Dumbell-Smith \u2013 known as Smudge \u2013 who he believed to be his dad, was not in fact his father.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Smudge had been shot down over Ashford, Kent, his grief-stricken widow, Doris, had become pregnant after a one-night stand with a young pilot \u2013 and Crawford was the result.<\/p>\n<div readability=\"7\">\n<p><span>You learn so much from grandchildren. They had a lot to do with my recovery<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2018I always used to talk about my father as the man who died in the<br \/>\nBattle of Britain. But he wasn\u2019t my father. Yet he was the love of my<br \/>\nmother\u2019s life, so I always thought, well, he was my father really. My<br \/>\nNan told me the truth when I was 14.<\/p>\n<p>I was puzzled why I hadn\u2019t been told earlier, but Mum and Nan had thought it best to wait.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018My real father, I think, was still alive. But I had no desire to go<br \/>\nlooking for him. When I eventually found out who he was, I thought,<br \/>\nwell, he doesn\u2019t know anything about me, doesn\u2019t know I exist. Why upset<br \/>\nthings?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Mum and Nan encouraged the young Michael to sing and act. \u2018There was<br \/>\nalways music in the house and we would all sing together in the<br \/>\nevenings.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He decided to change his surname to Crawford after seeing a Crawford\u2019s Biscuits van drive past him in the street. He married pretty Gabrielle Lewis in l965, but after they had two daughters, Emma and Lucy, they split up when he admitted he\u2019d been unfaithful. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Divorce is never a pleasant experience. You look upon it as a failure. But I learned to be a different person once we broke up. Sometimes you learn more from failure than you do from success.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He has homes in London, LA and New Zealand and has had no desire to marry again. <\/p>\n<p>When I mention romance to him, he chuckles, remarking that he\u2019s quite happy as things are. \u2018I have friends, I\u2019ve certainly never been lonely.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He heads the Sick Children\u2019s Trust, which provides accommodation near hospitals where families can stay while their children are having treatment. \u2018I support children because I was very fortunate myself. I didn\u2019t have a father, but I had complete love from my aunts, my uncles, my grandfather, my mum and my nan. They were everything to me. My mum\u2019s memory is with me all the time because of what she gave me.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She died when I was still young \u2013 I was 21, she was only 44 \u2013 but she used to say to me, \u201cAlways remember where you come from, Michael.
