{"id":289463,"date":"2011-03-04T15:01:04","date_gmt":"2011-03-04T15:01:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/04\/stocks-investors-pause-after-big-rally\/"},"modified":"2011-03-04T15:01:04","modified_gmt":"2011-03-04T15:01:04","slug":"stocks-investors-pause-after-big-rally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/04\/stocks-investors-pause-after-big-rally\/","title":{"rendered":"Stocks: Investors pause after big rally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"98.8300395257\">    <!-- KEEP --><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/markets\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/b8d7caaddex_dow.top_.png\" alt=\"chart_ws_index_dow.top.png\" width=\"475\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" class=\"cnnstoryImageFull\" \/><\/a><span><b>Click the chart for more market data.<\/b><\/span><span id=\"fb-recommend\"\/><br \/>\n<span>By CNNMoney staff<\/span><span>March 4, 2011: 10:00 AM ET<\/span><!--startclickprintexclude--><br clear=\"all\"\/><!--endclickprintexclude--><!-- CONTENT --><\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK\u00a0(CNNMoney) &#8212; U.S. markets opened flat Friday, following the previous session&#8217;s big rally, as investors worked through the government&#8217;s monthly jobs report.<\/p>\n<p>The Labor Department said the <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/04\/news\/economy\/february_jobs_report\/index.htm\">economy added 192,000 jobs<\/a> in February &#8212; roughly in line with expectations, as the unemployment rate ticked down to 8.9%.<\/p>\n<p><!-- REAP --><!--startclickprintexclude--><!--endclickprintexclude--><!-- \/REAP --><\/p>\n<p>The Dow Jones industrial average (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=INDU&#038;source=story_quote_link\">INDU<\/a>) fell 10 points, or 0.1%; the S&#038;P 500 (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=SPX&#038;source=story_quote_link\">SPX<\/a>) slid 2.4 points, or 0.2%; and the Nasdaq  Composite (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=COMP&#038;source=story_quote_link\">COMP<\/a>) shed 8.4 points, or 0.3%.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. stocks posted their <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/03\/markets\/markets_newyork\/index.htm\">best day in three months<\/a> on Thursday, as Wall Street rallied behind a strong unemployment claims report along with a modest drop in energy prices.<\/p>\n<p>The Dow Jones industrial average (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=INDU&#038;source=story_quote_link\">INDU<\/a>) rose 191 points, or 1.6%, to 12,258. The session&#8217;s gains were the best for the blue-chip indicator in 2011, and the largest since Dec. 1.<\/p>\n<p><!-- REAP --><!--startclickprintexclude--><!--endclickprintexclude--><!-- \/REAP --><\/p>\n<p>Thursday&#8217;s strong rally will be a hard act to follow, said Lakshman Achuthan, managing director of the Economic Cycle Research Institute, and the post-rally hangover is partly responsible for the lackluster activity.<\/p>\n<p>Also, he said that the strong payroll report has diminished expectations for further government stimulus and that&#8217;s taking some of the wind out of the sails. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is disappointing in that it suggest that there has been no acceleration of private sector job growth from the fourth quarter,&#8221; said Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy for Brown Brothers Harriman, in a client note <\/p>\n<p>Oil prices hit a high over <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/04\/markets\/oil\/index.htm\">$103.30 a barrel<\/a> in early trading. And <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/04\/news\/economy\/gas_prices\/index.htm\">gas prices continued to rise<\/a>, adding 4.4 cents to a national average of $3.3471 a gallon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/economy\/index.html\"><b>Economy:<\/b><\/a> February&#8217;s jobs report was roughly in line with what Wall Street economists were looking for. Twenty-five economists surveyed by CNNMoney were predicting that the economy would have added 190,000 jobs in February, while the unemployment rate was expected to rise to 9.2%.<\/p>\n<p>A report on factory orders is due after the opening bell.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/companies\/index.html\"><b>Companies<\/b><\/a>: Family Dollar (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=FDO&#038;source=story_quote_link\">FDO<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2010\/snapshots\/10103.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) rose about 4% over reports that it rejected a takeover offer from investor Nelson Peltz<b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/world_markets\/europe\/\"><b>World markets:<\/b><\/a> European stocks were higher in morning trading. Britain&#8217;s FTSE 100 ticked up 0.5%, the DAX in Germany rose 0.7<b>%<\/b> and France&#8217;s CAC 40 advanced 0.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Asian markets ended the session sharply higher.
