Education Minister Betty Mould Iddrisu says she has been assured by principals of schools in the Greater Accra Metropolis that they will turn up in their numbers to march in commemoration of Ghana’s 54th Independence Anniversary this Sunday.

The assurance comes after some teachers planned to boycott the march unless the current salary anomalies are resolved.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday March 3, in response to threats by teachers to boycott the traditional 6th March parade by school children because of dissatisfaction with their salaries after their migration to the Single Spine Salary Structure, Mrs Iddrisu said it would have been unfair to school children to call the march off, especially after the effort they had put in.

“We had a meeting with the GES, with the directors, the Metro directors, and they assured us that they will be there for the students.

“6th of March is not about me, or President Mills, or about NDC, it’s about all of us! These students have been practicing for one month, two months now. I have been there to see their dress rehearsals. You know that this time it’s only about the students, it is not about any adults parade. It is for the children, and they are going to do a fantastic parade on Sunday 6th of March and they are going to make their teachers proud.”

Meanwhile, Mrs Iddrisu says the current salary challenges faced by teachers will only be rectified at the end of March. According to her, even though government remains committed to improving the welfare of teachers, the current errors which had led to a reduction in the salaries of teachers will linger on pending redress by a technical committee set up to rectify the issue.

Madam Betty Mould Iddrisu, who was addressing a press conference in response to the teachers’ agitations noted that all teachers will have their challenges addressed.

She adds however that a meeting between government and the two teacher associations will come off next week in an attempt to take the general concern of teachers on board.
