Sadly, it has more in common with Monty Python And The Holy Grail.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Giamatti is terrible as King John, battling the barons who made him sign the Magna Carta: a mixture of pantomime villain and Colonel Gaddafi. Traces of an American accent don\u2019t help.<\/p>\n<p>He is opposed by a sort of medieval Magnificent Seven, led by Knight Templar James Purefoy, arguably the least charismatic warrior since Clive Owen in King Arthur, and blustering, blokey baron Brian Cox, who seems to have been taking acting lessons from Brian Blessed.<\/p>\n<p>Together with effete aristo Derek Jacobi and his smouldering, sexually frustrated young wife Kate Mara, they defend Rochester Castle from King John and his Danish mercenaries.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s ham acting, anachronistic dialogue (\u2018Get off my back!\u2019),\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 groanworthy cliches (\u2018It\u2019s too quiet\u2019) and graphic brutality. <\/p>\n<p>The low point is a scene where one of the leading characters yells defiance as his hands and feet are chopped off one by one by a salivating King John, a scene so Pythonesque that an audience of critics greeted it not with the shocked awe presumably desired by director Jonathan English, but with whoops of joyous derision.<\/p>\n<p><span>Rango<\/span> is an animated spoof western packed full of in-jokes that will sail over the heads of most children and anyone who isn\u2019t familiar with such child-unfriendly films as Chinatown, A Fistful Of Dollars and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leading actor Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski and chums must have had a whale of a time making it.<\/p>\n<p>Scriptwise, though, it\u2019s a mess.
