Stirring a straight-talking TV chef and a prickly historian into the mix was always going be a recipe for fireworks. \u00a0<\/p>\n

And as Dr David Starkey began his teaching stint in Jamie Oliver\u2019s
\nschool for unruly children, the result turned out even more spicy than
\nexpected.<\/p>\n

In the first episode of Jamie\u2019s Dream School, broadcast on Channel 4
\non Wednesday, the esteemed academic told a pupil he was \u2018so fat\u2019 that he
\n\u2018couldn\u2019t really move\u2019. <\/p>\n

There would be \u2018plenty of dieting opportunities\u2019 as Oliver was running the school, he added.<\/p>\n

Oliver, who hand-picked Dr Starkey as the show\u2019s history teacher, was
\nappalled at the outburst and responded by condemning it as \u2018completely
\ninappropriate\u2019. <\/p>\n

The pupil \u2013 and viewers \u2013 were similarly outraged. And at the end of
\nthe programme, the chef was even seen discussing whether Starkey should
\nbe sacked.<\/p>\n

The show, which also features Lord Winston, Rolf Harris and Alastair
\nCampbell, is about a school set up by Oliver, designed to engage with
\nyoungsters who have given up on education.<\/p>\n

Dr Starkey, whose lessons are meant to take the youngsters on a
\n\u2018grand journey\u2019 through history to modern Britain, was seen showing his
\nclass jewellery from the recently discovered Staffordshire Hoard \u2013 a
\nhaul of gold and silver Anglo-Saxon metalwork. <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the classroom spat arose as Dr Starkey tried to convince students
\ntheir brains are the most important thing about themselves. <\/p>\n

He compared it to the way many worry about their faces or go to the gym to \u2018work out their pecs\u2019.<\/p>\n

When one of the students flexed his muscles and made a comment, the
\nacademic cut him down to size with one of the scathing put-downs that
\nare his trademark.<\/p>\n

\u2018Oh come on. You\u2019re so fat you couldn\u2019t really move,\u2019 he told the 18-year-old.<\/p>\n

The pupil, Conor Power, from Sidcup, in Kent, was clearly upset. He replied: \u2018I guarantee you I can move faster than you old man. Look at your glasses man.\u2019 <\/p>\n

The famously prickly academic added: \u2018The poor lad has got a problem. With Jamie\u2019s food there will be lots of dieting opportunities.\u2019 <\/p>\n

Conor retorted: \u2018You\u2019re about 4ft tall. Have you always been that tall?\u2019 <\/p>\n

In his opening lesson, Dr Starkey\u00a0 told the teenagers they were all there because they had \u2018failed\u2019. <\/p>\n

But despite the school\u2019s good intentions, Dr Starkey complained there was no \u2018central direction\u2019, \u2018ethos\u2019 or \u2018rules\u2019 to the institution \u2013 he initially refused to go back to the school after his first lesson claiming children today are \u2018treated with kid gloves\u2019.<\/p>\n

Real-life headmaster John D\u2019 Abbro, who runs the school with Oliver, said on the show: \u2018I think it is an inappropriate comment and I can\u2019t ignore it. Back at school that for me would be a potential disciplinary matter. So it is difficult.\u2019 <\/p>\n

He said Dr Starkey\u2019s behaviour embodied everything that was wrong with children\u2019s education. <\/p>\n

Oliver, who said it was \u2018completely inappropriate\u2019, added: \u2018Ultimately the teachers are the adults and shouldn\u2019t be throwing verbal abuse at the young people.\u2019<\/p>\n

The youngster is seen telling his mother about Dr Starkey. \u2018I swear to God I felt like picking the table up and throwing it at him,\u2019 he said. <\/p>\n

Viewers were similarly unimpressed. One said: \u2018How to woo disadvantaged youngsters into history \u2013 just call them fat. Nice one.\u2019<\/p>\n

Jamie’s Dream School is on Channel 4 on Wednesdays at 9pm<\/span><\/p>\n
